OT: Backing into a parking space

Good morning. I’ve seemed to notice a big increase in people backing into parking spaces. Not talking about tailgating, just normal, everyday parking spaces. I’m sitting outside eating and just watched one said episode. I Googled it just to see if it’s a thing. I found the following article online, and I agree with it. I hope this finds just one person who does this & helps them to simply be a better person:

Parking backward

Edit: I’m not Anonymous (PerchedOnRings). I guess I used the wrong login. Anyone know why I’m constantly getting logged out?

2 reasons for me

1. I have a crome bumper and a steel ARB bull guard on the frot that would damage the other car before mine. Crome bumper easily dents.

2. Like her, it's easy to leave fast without hitting another car and denting crome bumper.

We lived in Japan for 2 years and it's the expectation that you back into parking spaces there. Just cultural, I guess, but I don't know if I ever saw anyone pull into a parking spot. Cars are much smaller though.

I agree that it is much easier to pull out than to back out. That goes without saying. Generally, though, it is more difficult to back in that pull in, so that would seem to negate the pulling out advantage. However, backup cameras are the equalizer, particularly if they have the guidelines showing where your car is going. This makes backing in relatively quick and easy.

We just stayed a week at the beach and had to park in a parking garage with very narrow lanes between the rows. Backing out would have very difficult in a larger vehicle.

All that said, though, I usually pull in quick and just use caution when backing out.

Backing in is best unless the parking spaces are diagonal and backing in would work against the traffic flow. Modern vehicles with their cameras and proximity alarms have made backing in easy. It was never as hard as most people make it.
I do enjoy the negotiation when someone drives past a space and decides to back in and someone zooms in the space straight on. Very entertaining

What’s hard is the waiting, for absolutely nothing. Great stats in the article.

As you mentioned, it's just too easy to back in now with the cameras and alarms. I don't usually do it, but it's especially awesome in tight spaces (every doctor's office I go to now must make as much on parking the way they make these garage spaces barely wider than the cars). But really, there's no questions or hesitation when backing in as you can see every inch around you. No guessing if you have room - you can just see it.

1. In a 4 door pickup like mine, with a not-so-great turning radius, backing in is easier than pulling in forward.
2. The backup camera allows me to center the vehicle much easier than if I pull in forward.
3. Since the vehicle is pretty long, backing in allows me to not have the boat/trailer hitch sticking out into the travel way.

The fact that is pisses some people off is just an added bonus.

I just park away from people and don't worry about. I get so sick of people banging their door and hitting my door
I park as far away from the front door of the grocery store/shop/restaurant/movie theater as I can to eliminate old people from opening the door of their Mercury Marquis, Ford LTD, Lincoln Continental, Edsel on my nice car. Besides, I need the longer walk!

I just look for a pull through parking space and then park, so that when I leave I just pull forward. This way you never have to back into a space. If I have to walk a little more, so be it.
Learned that when I had to drive a corporate vehicle. It was repeated ad nauseam, UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES YOU SHOULD BACK OUT OF A PARKING SPACE. NONE.

Well I pull in simply because it's easier to push your buggy right to the trunk and unload groceries and such instead of having to try to get it between two cars and between four cars in the back. What happens when four people are all trying to unload if you are all backed in?

My GF gets mad at me when I do that. But my truck is a 2012 GMC Canyon and looks brand new

You can pull out of a parking space faster than you can back out of one . . . but you can pull into a parking space a heck of a lot faster than you can back into one. And you can back out of a parking space a whole lot faster than you can back into one (much larger degree of error). The net time-savings for backing into a parking space just isn't there.

However, if you are driving an extra long pickup truck then backing into the space so the rear end of your vehicle can hang over the grass median or sidewalk is better than having it hang out into the flow of traffic.

I call ******** on the people that say you can’t back in as fast as you can back out. I guess some of y’all need to learn how to back. I drive a tundra crew max with long bed. I’m not pulling into a parking place. I back in 100% of the time. I’m all for being nice and thinking of others, but that’s not to be used for every excuse to make your life easier than mine. Not really even sure how me backing in makes your day any different.

if you want to pull in the back of your car or suv is easily accessible even if I back in. It’s because you think it takes me longer? If so wouldn’t it be courteous of you to be patient and let me do what I want to do?

When we were on vacation recently at the beach and had to park in a garage with narrow spaces, I just made sure I parked next to people who had really nice cars, assuming they'd be disinclined to ding the edge of their door on my car :)

Apparently didn’t read article. Stats disprove every argument here.

To be clear, my original post was mostly about an urban environment, because that’s where I live. Not talking about the Dollar General in Olanta. If people feel the need to bring their farm trucks into town, I hate you already, so park however you feel like. I might start not watching my shopping cart so closely “just to piss people off” and “oh, you wanted me to be courteous & NOT hit your dooley?”

I never said I don’t live in an urban environment. I live in Forest Acres. But that “Dooley” that you speak of happens to be a major tool in what I do for a living and the only vehicle I own. Also no bigger than any other half ton truck on the market. But I guess since you didn’t know that you probably drive a Prius. Since we are making assumptions and all. How much bigger of a prick could you be. But you want me to be courteous and not back in. Give me a break Karen.

I heard or read somewhere that backing into a parking space is correlated with being optimistic. I don't know if this is true, however I consider myself optimistic and I often back into parking spaces.

Yesterday, I was backing into a parking space at a Discount Tire store. I use the rear view mirror to line everything up. As I approached the back curb, the car beside me started slowing backing out of their space, and I didn't realize they were moving. I instinctively hit the brake, the other car continued slowly backing out while I was still. For a moment, it seemed my car was moving, because the other car was moving away from me, however my rear view camera was still, because my car was still. I thought my camera had frozen and I was going to back over the curb. It was very weird. o_O

I've been backing in so long I have trouble pulling into a parking space. I don't think I'm a bad person though - not usually anyway:)

We were inclined to back in when I was in the Army to be prepared for a quick exit/escape movement if needed. That said, i don't do it anymore.

I don't know why it's so hard to understand. If you are not holding anyone up, go ahead and back in to a spot. If there are cars behind you and you still back in you're a lowlife that deserves to catch gonorrhea.

If you are behind me and pissed that I am holding you up because I am backing in, well, you should have gotten off your dead *** and left one minute earlier and then you would have been in front of me.. Just my opinion..

I hope you get to back in at the gonorrhea clinic, too.

True, but, those old people can't handle the weight of the doors on their 6,000 pound cars. Thankfully, they never park anywhere near where I do -- they will circle the lot for hours waiting for an open space near the door.

Maybe I just need to stop parking close to those water exercise classes and Bingo game parlors.
