They've had 40 transfers since his arrival. Just today, on the heels of their spring game, 17 hit the portal...17 in one day...including the star WR from the spring game (who by all accounts stayed long enough to use the spring game on ESPN as an audition) and have previously lost their leading WR from last year. Also lost a CB who was expected to be a key contributor this year. It's being called a mass exodus. The Prime defenders will say "well, this is what he wanted. He said he arrived he was bringing his own baggage." For sure, Deion was planning to cut some dead weight from the roster, but no way he was counting on 40 players. That's just insane.

Maybe it's a lesson to new coaches: don't come in and tell your new team they suck before you've ever even had a chance to get to know them and work with them. A good coach teaches and coaches players up.

I saw one guy really trying to talk up Deion and noted how fast CU’s players got on and off the field, lol. That place must have been a real dumpster if getting on and off the field in a timely manner is progress.

Did you see his original address to the team? He pretty much told them that he wanted them gone.

I don't see how they can survive the loss of this:

  • OL Jackson Anderson: A 6-foot-4, 295-pounder from Mineola, Texas, Anderson redshirted in 2021 and wasn't a contributor in 2022. He was a three-star prospect in the Class of 2021.
  • DL Aaron Austin: The 6-foot-2, 230-pounder was a three star prospect in the Class of 2022 out of Fort Worth, Texas.
  • LB Shakaun Bowser: The 6-foot-4, 230-pounder from Queen Creek, Arizona, didn't record any stats last year. He was a three-star prospect in the Class of 2022.
  • LB Devin Grant: The 6-foot-3, 260-pound sophomore has played in 15 games and started two during his three seasons with the program. He had 14 tackles and two tackles for loss in 2022 and was expected to contend for playing time in 2023.
  • OL Alex Harkey: The 6-foot-6, 305-pounder played one season at Colorado after transferring from Tyler (Texas) Junior College.
  • WR Montana Lemonious-Craig: The superstar from the spring game is one of the highest-profile departures from the roster. He is already receiving offers from FBS programs according to his Twitter account.
  • CB Jason Oliver Jr: The rising sophomore defensive back had 11 tackles in 2022 -- mostly as a reserve and on special teams. The 6-foot, 175-pounder wasn't expected to see much action in 2023.
  • WR Grant Page: A 6-foot-3, 200-pound rising redshirt freshman who was an option for rotational snaps. He played in two games in 2022.
  • DB Oakie Salave'a: Salave'a is a 6-foot-4, 220-pound rising redshirt freshman came to Colorado as a three-star athlete in the Class of 2022. He did not record any stats as a true freshman.
  • LB Aubrey Smith: Smith had eight tackles and one sack as a true freshman. He was a three-star prospect in the Class of Buford (Georgia) High School.
  • DB Xavier Smith: The 6-foot-2, 185-pounder from metro Atlanta signed as a three-star prospect in the Class of 2022. The speedster was the Georgia Region 4-AAAAAA Player of The Year in 2021.
  • RB Deion Smith: Smith was a three-star prospect in the Class of 2018 out of Houston.
  • WR Chase Sowell: Sowell entered the portal on Saturday. The rising redshirt freshman had two catches for 23 yards in three games last year, and was expected to contend for playing time in 2023.
  • DB Tyrin Taylor: The rising junior had 26 tackles and one interception last season. He was expected to contend for playing time as a starter for the Buffaloes prior to entering the portal.
  • WR Jordyn Tyson: The leading receiver from last season was a three-star prospect prior to his success with the Buffaloes in 2022.
  • RB Victor Venn: A three-star member of the Buffs' 2022 class, Venn didn't record any stats a season ago but had some breakout moments during the team's spring game.
  • DB Jeremy Mack: The 6-foot junior was a junior college transfer from East Mississippi CC who had 48 tackles last season with four starts.
  • WR Ty Robinson: The junior entered the transfer portal after catching nine passes for for 95 yards and a touchdown over his career

Yes & after all this carnage have we heard who picked these white boys up? Enquiring minds don’t even want to know. Let the Prime Dog eat!

We’ll know how this approach works in a couple 3 yrs…….maybe just like Jackson State🤔

Yep, time will tell. It won't be nearly as easy as it was at Jackson State, of course. All he needed there was a couple of really good players to out-talent the other teams. One of those players was, of course, his son. I'm not sure how many other sons he has who play QB. Even at that, he lost the 2 biggest games he had Jackson State.

Part of what I don't like is that he's all about himself. First, it's totally stupid that he has a nickname. Coach Prime is moronic. He's gotta grow up with that nonsense. He hasn't accomplished a single noteworthy thing in coaching yet, other than likely setting a record for the number of transfers to enter the portal in one year.

I've got much more respect for someone like Beamer who came in, rolled up his sleeves and worked with he had, even though it wasn't much, but patched together 6 wins to get a bowl and won the bowl. That's a real leader. Not someone who just comes in and tells all the kids they suck and he's bringing his own players. And a coach who looks the incumbent players in the eyes and tells them they have to earn their spots, then in the next breath saying his son, who wasn't even officially a CU student yet, was already named the starting QB.

I had seen about the 23 already gone. Now I see this today. It seems staggering. He may be able to reel more bodies in, but
choices to match up with the positions and players lost will probably be a net loss in talent.

This is like a player's coup.

I have not been following this closely, but I wonder about the net loss vs net gain.

Colorado stunk, right? And earlier stories were about how many free agents wanted to follow "coach prime" there. I wonder how much of this is taking out the trash vs people abandoning ship.

If they end up near 85 scholarships, then maybe thus was him jettisoning kids.

I'm sure there is some of both, but 40 is an awful, awful lot.

It's a bold strategy, so we'll see how it works in the long run. It will either become a cautionary tale or it will become the blueprint all new coaching hires follow.

Agreed.

The sheer numbers are staggering. And even if he had 40 bodies coming in to replace those, that alone is a whole other headache. (Trying to form a cohesive team)

Something tells me there are experienced head coaches out there that were shaking their heads at this from the beginning (as if Sanders can't do that).

Maybe it works for Sanders (given enough time), but team leadership dynamics is a fragile & critical part of coaching. And if you lose it, you're going to take some beatings.

I think this is the secret sauce that Muschamp didn't have and maybe Shane Beamer does have.

I don't see how they can survive the loss of this:
They seem to have a lot of transfer targets that would be upgrades, how many can they get? and how many upgrades are need to match the mass exodus. The guys they are losing, helped win a game last year, so progress is a low bar.

No one is going to use the transfer portal to the extreme that Coach Prime is doing, this will be interesting

Targets (Seems like he needs more LOL)

WR/TE Marcus Peterson = Red shirted at Cincinnati last year as a freshman

S Shilo Sanders, not transferred in yet, but we know who he is, and where he is going

DT Chazz Wallace, Old Dominion, visted Boulder last weekend

DT Amari McNeill Tenn backup) has visited

DE Derrick Mclendon (FSU) visited Boulder last week, but we know where he is going, :)

DE Anthony Campbell Louisiana Monroe, 6 foot 7 DE,

DE Kahari Manns (Maine) - Very productive player at Maine

LB Brendan Gant, FSU can play safety as well

Edge Cam Robertson (North Texas) Conf USA All freshman visited Boulder last week
.
CD Jaquez Robinson Alabama

CB Marcus Washington Georgia, will visit Boulder next week

I know they had 29 transfers coming in and are brining more in, I wonder how many players from last year Colorado are actually staying?

Just read an article that showed a leaked video of Deion talking to the team ahead of the spring game and basically predicted a mass exodus. At least he said not everyone in the room would be there after the spring game.

The article said CU currently has 20 scholarship players on the roster. Dadgum. The question is, though: is he gonna get substantially better players from the portal? Most of the ones who have transferred out were 3* guys. Most of the guys in the portal now are 3* who are transferring for the same reason the guys at CU are transferring. He's basically rebuilding the team with the portal, and I just don't see you being able to pull off a massive overhaul/upgrade that way with the kind of talent that's in the portal. Most teams hitting the portal now are rolling the dice on finding a diamond in the rough or just adding players for depth.

How does the CU situation compare to the recent one at UTjr? I remember them also having a large exodus of players.

His accomplishments for HBCU football can’t be overlooked. Take a few minutes, make a phone call to coach Pough….. he’ll take your call & be glad to educate a white boy on what he did for their game…….or ask coach Staley.

He’s been the type of person you either luv or hate. No need for personal attacks on him.

Hey, he hasn’t even coached his first game yet. What he has done is bring the fan base hope after a 1 win season. AND given the upcoming schedule they need something to hold on to.

Call me crazy, but I wouldn't find any hope in seeing roughly half of the roster heading for the exit with minimal opportunity to upgrade what is now gone.

And seriously, there's no need for race baiting. We get plenty of that elsewhere, and it is both disingenuous and exhausting.

Hard to tell if he wants to be taken seriously or if he's just playing a game (The Coach Prime Game)!

It was my understanding this is what DS wanted and expected there. I'm interested to see if it works for him. Actually, it should be interesting. The days are gone when players had a loyalty to the school and coaches are expected to use what's there. I mean why should coaches have to anymore? They are not their guys. That's a two way street. If DS wants to build from scratch in this era, so be it. We'll see how that works out.

As I also stated in the WBB thread, you can live or die with the transfer and they usually have a limited shelf life!

Getting gutted, or doing the gutting?

It is a ton of players, but he's got a ton coming in.

And Deion’s strategy could be the new reality for the players. Everyone thought the players would have all the power since they can demand money and leave anytime they want, but now because of that the coaches are exercising their power to tell them to leave. It used to be untoward to ask the kids that were dead weight to leave, now you can just tell them to hit the road (because they're the ones that asked to be treated like employees).

I look forward to seeing this play out, no matter which way it goes. Finally there's a reason to pay attention to sports from that part of the country again.

Arkansas offered the WR today from Colorado, Montana Lemonious-Craig, as did Purdue, BYU, Miss State, Cal, San Diego State, Oregon State, Prairie View, UCF, Penn State, Auburn, Colorado State, Arizona, Washington State, Cincinnati, USF, Liberty, Uconn, Tenn State, Southern Utah, Tulane, West Virgina, I guess it has been a busy day for him!

I can only read the first line of the Athletic article, but it quotes Deion as saying to a player: “Hey Buddy, you’re going to get cut today.”

He’s gone full professional mode, which makes sense because they’re probably working NIL deals for all the players. Don’t want to pay someone you don’t think is worth the money.

I guess the final tally is 49 transfers out. Leaves them with 20 scholarship players. Add 29 coming from the portal and 19 in their recruiting class, brings them to 68. So they need 17 more from the portal, bringing their portal total to 46 players transferring in.

I'm just not really sure I get the strategy. If you were going to bring in a ton of 4* guys, it makes sense. But he's bringing the one 5* from Jackson State. The rest are all 3*. Almost all of the transfer outs are also 3*. On paper, there's not really much upgrading. Odds are a few of the guys coming in will be better than the guys leaving, some will be about the same, others worse. 11 players are FCS transfers.

It looks like a recipe for disaster. 76% of their roster will be new players this year. It will be a remarkable feat if he can turn that into a cohesive unit in the few weeks of fall practice. If he can, kudos to him. I have a feeling it's going to be remarkable, one way or the other.

We'll know the impact next year if the number of HS recruits signed is next to zero because they don't want to commit to "Coach Prime's" strategy. And who could blame them! Colorado will = Transfer U

Yep. A lot will depend on the results on the field this year. He's either brilliant or an idiot. Conventional wisdom says you can't start with a 76% new roster and expect good results, but conventional wisdom isn't always correct.

HS recruits are the foundation which a team is built upon.
Look at Beamer and Staley - their recruits love and respect them and form the culture needed for a true "team" to develop.

Might work if you want to be Portal U but would have to make HS recruits very gun shy and reluctant to commit to someone like "Coach Prime".

Right now there are 4 commitments in the '24 class. 3 3* and 1 4*. 2 of the recruits are from Valdosta, Ga.

Now, let's see who sticks for next year and what he'll do with HS recruiting between now and LOI time.

That is true, which makes his approach all the more questionable. He's not overall upgrading the talent level on the team and he's still gonna have to hit the recruiting trail for the next cycle, the main difference being, his results will come into play next time. This cycle, he was recruiting on hype alone. If this experiment to start with a 76% new roster blows up, it could hurt. It could also set them years behind. It's hard enough to do a rebuild with an intact team. I'm trying to imagine how much harder the process is when you bring in 76% new players.

Of course, I get the message he's trying to send: you guys sucked last year, so most of you gotta go. But, again, he's mostly just replacing 3* players with 3* players. And, when you take a handful of players from the portal, you can kind of pick and choose who best fits your system. With them taking 46 players from the portal, you can't convince me he's being all that choosy about who they take.

I guess the question that will be answered is: Does gutting the roster speed up or slow down a rebuild?
