Cheap Trick was not at the Hump. It was at the old gym whose name I forget.
The singer was so wasted he couldn't talk. Could just sing his tunes.

Back before the Hump, ZZTop opened for Black Oak Arkansas in the CowBarn in I think the Spring of 73. Also saw Chicago, Jerry Jeff Walker, and Buddy Miles in there. Once saw The Tams in Lee Hall and it was fantastic. That was probably in 72 or 73.

We went to the ZZ Top concert after 2001 and it was excellent. I guess it depends on different people's A-list. We've also gone to several concerts at the Riley Center in Meridian. Did State switch from the Hump to the Riley Center?
ZZ were definitely A-listers in the 70's and 80's but not as much in the 2000's (to me). I only meant the numbers of big time acts in their prime were lower after 2001 when I said that. I love Blues Traveler and others who played too, but I wouldn't call '07 their prime years.

*I fully recognize this opinion may be solely based on the fact that I am old.

In my time (88-92), I mostly went to concerts in McCarthy. The only one in the Hump I remember was the Cheap Trick (LA Guns opened) in 1990. I was not into country music, but my parents came up to see Gene Watson (I think in the Hump) in fall of 88.
The Smithereens played at McCarthy during that time too. May have been 91 or 92.

I was at that show

It had been raining and I was standing up front

So good

Joan Jett played there a couple years later— the night before Homecoming… against Memphis?

She asked us if State was going to win. We told her no and said we sucked (State actually won that game)
I was at that weird Al concert too.

Michael Marion

As so often happens, much of the success of Music Maker Productions can be laid to one transcendent talent.

Someone who worked in the operation could help refine my understanding, but Michael Marion was once the heart of Music Maker Productions and it's my understanding he was the prime force behind bringing so many of the names you know to MSU back in the day.

He was later the GM at what is now the Cadence Bank Arena in Tupelo. That's how Tupelo got The Eagles and many other huge talents to come to town back when they did. I was working in Tupelo at the time and that's where and when I became familiar with his story.

He left there and went home to do the same at Simmons Bank Arena in the Little Rock, Ark., area, where he is now.

Why were concerts at the Hump stopped? Maybe because ticket prices have gone out of sight?
I'm not sure why we had a lull, but I do believe they are coming back. I think we'll see some good bands coming back - whether that's at the Hump, Dude, or DWS, I don't know... but lots of schools are doing big concerts again.

I thought it was great. And I got paid to be there.
I get it, not railing on ol Ronnie. I like some of his stuff now. Just sounded funny that college students had him as the headliner. I would have loved to have been in the mosh pit for 'Any Day Now'.

It’s not really music related, but Bob Hope had a show in the Hump sometime in the mid to late 70’s. My wife and I went and it was a pretty good and funny show as I recall. Packed house that night.

I was at the Springsteen concert in '81. Clarence shared a few drinks with a few of my fraternity brothers at a bar the night before.

Also remember going to a small club in Jackson (or was it Memphis?) to see Rick James. That was when Superfreak was a hit. I remember everybody did this thing where we'd stick two fingers out and snap our wrists to the beat of that song. Was just the thing you did back then.

Man I loved that place... I would pay a lot of money to go back and get a sandwich and a large sweet tea today.
One of my fraternity brothers owned it. He went on to become a very successful restaurateur, owning several establishments. He'd let us do deliveries anytime we wanted, making some extra dough, but mostly so we could deliver to the sorority houses. :p

Those steamed & pressed pita bread sandwiches were the bomb!
