Not if you want to retire with some good years left in the tank.

Yeah yeah...somebody is going to murk me in Memphis but not in New York.
I'd love to know the number of retirees who have to leave NY upon retiring because they can't afford to stay. I've personally known a couple myself.

Just imagine that list 25. 50, 100 years from now. The way things are going today, the Times will be hard pressed to put any schools in the left column. But a given will be Memphis still in the right column. Where's Jackson on this list?

Seattle has squatters no matter what. Theres homeless people everywhere up there.
Little cities of them under all of the bridges. Hanging out in doorways, etc. everywhere. I don’t think I have ever been anywhere that made me feel more uncomfortable. Been there several times and spent most of it looking over my shoulder.

It was Seattle. Had to look it up. They called it "Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone" (chaz). It was a police free thing by protesters.
Yeah. And it was incredibly overblown by how media portrayed it.
I was there once during the period when Chaz/Chop was popular with media because I have family that lives in a nearby suburb, and once a few months just before it was set up.

It just wasn't close to as chaotic as portrayed and was easy to see as a visitor who had been to the metro/city/neighborhood many times.
It also was a really odd thing to see, since I hadn't seen such a thing before.
I didn't like it's existence and don't think the city properly handled its creation.
To be clear I don't want to live in/next to such an area of a city.

Always take what the media is selling and de hype it by about 50% to start. I still remember a decade or so during one of the higher river levels it being implied by the national outlets that the city of Memphis was in danger of flooding. Granted, some outlying areas not protected by bluffs got some flooding but the story being sold was much more dramatic. It's never as bad as the media (or a politician) tells you it is.

LOL at Seattle people moving to Memphis. They literally don’t know how good they have it. Straight delusion. Try setting up that Chaz shlt in Orange Mound, and see how long those purple headed white slobs last, they’ll be praying for cops.

The reason these cities have homeless is because the homeless know it’s nice and that no one will kill them for a nickel.

Olive Branch has won national recognition at a great town. Collierville and Germantown are excellent. And that is where these west coast folks are moving to.

Seattle also spends alot of money taking care of the homeless which is good but it also exacerbates the problem.

And the root cause of most of the homelessness in King County is the affordability of housing.

I saw this the other day, but the list was slightly longer. Jackson and Birmingham didn't want to miss out on all the accolades... And what the 17 are they doing to the children at Augusta National?

In all seriousness, that’s why all these lists are dumb. Even the worst cities in the country have a nice suburb or two.

But in general, there are still nice overall cities. Seattle is one of them. Memphis is not. But if the driver is a cheaper COL, then it can be fine (which it normally is, if we get down to the heart of the matter). But that comes with certain disadvantages. Those folks could just move to a nicer area of Seattle if it was truly all about crime.

The crime and stuff makes for a better drama story to tell their new neighbors, rather than the fact that they wanted more affordable housing.

It’s hard to find good crime data, but it appears to be down quite a bit since COVID.

Obviously, they’ve fallen off a cliff over the last 30 years or so. You’re like 3X less likely to a victim of violent crime today than you were when Clinton was elected. That’s pretty much the trend across the board (property crime, etc.).

I have only been once back in 2016, and this was my exact experience. Most disappointing city I have ever visited.

Gulfport dinged for “affordability,” but somehow Irvine and Fremont are affordable? 17 off, NYT.
Yea, you’d think people that do these list would check for obvious data problems and seeing a California location listed as affordable and a Mississippi location listed as unaffordable should have been an immediate flag to check that data.

Just googling Gulfport affordable would have brought up results about it being listed as one of the most affordable beach towns in the country.

But journalists are largely stupid and lazy and under a lot of pressure to generate clicks, with no real consequences for being unreliable.

Progressives help build nice cities with lots of cool things to do. I like travelling to progressive cities. They ruin parts of them because of their pathological tolerance and acceptance of dysfunction and disorder from people belonging to groups they believe shouldn't be held to the same standards they have for themselves and their kids.
