Mizzou's contention is that the ball was snapped 30+ yards down field, but the tackle box does technically extend to the offense's goal line. But, with the ball being that far down field, they say there's no way the defender could have known what the punter's intention was, so he made the snap decision to tackle him. As it is, the punter was somehow able to pick the ball up and get off an improvised punt a nanosecond before the defender hit him. Roughing the passer, UK first down. Game over for Mizzou. Definitely a weird play. Looks like it was called by the book, but this honestly seems like the kind of thing that would happen to us, where the opposing team is somehow rewarded for a horrible play.

If he picked it up and tried to throw a pass would it be roughing the passer?

Why would it not be considered a fumble and a free ball and the punter is now a runner?

Punter should have just kicked/throw the ball out of the end zone.
That is what most would do. In this case it worked out. He picked it up and kicked it. It wasn’t tipped and he was tackled. 15 yard personal foul and KY kept the ball.

Freak play...but yea, by the book....can't tackle the punter after he kicks.
