When I was a kid, my Dad owned and operated 2 retail businesses. One a liquor store and the other a shop that sold ice cream, hamburgers, hot dogs, milk shakes, cigerrettes, cigars, magazines, candy, cookies, cakes, chips, sodas, etc. Of course I was not old enough to work in the liquor store. But I did work in his other store. My Dad paid me a lot more than he should have and I was worth. My Dad hired lots of teenagers to work in that store. Whenever I served a customer, I would always say "Thank you sir" or "Thank you Ma'am". I thanked ALL the customers with those words. One of the older White teenagers (about 6 years older than me), took me aside one day and said "Don't say "sir" or "ma'am" to Blacks. He probably did not say "Black". But I don't remember. I thought about what he said and realized that a Black person's money could help me buy a bike or whatever I wanted as much as a White person's money. So, I just ignored the suggestion and continued as is. I saved up my money and was able to buy me a sports car as my high school graduation present and drove that car during my days at Carolina and beyond.
