OT - Pete Rose Memory

I have vague memories of network TV (when there were only three channels) interrupting scheduled programing to show one of Pete's bats. This would have been in the late 70s, I guessing when Pete was chasing the consecutive hit streak.

Anyone else remember this?

It's crazy how far baseball has fallen since being the national past time.

I remember
Back before utube, dish network,even internet.
Plugged tv in wall
Picked up abc cbs nbc
Was cool watching him break record.
I remember some announcers said after he broke the record..
Pete was in the hole 0 and 2.
Unp called time out and dusted plate off and said under his breath, you can’t break the record if your too tight.

I got to watch The Big Red Machine and Pete Rose play the Pittsburgh Pirates and Willie Stargell back in ‘74 in Cincinnati . It was a dream come true for a 12 year old from rural Mississippi.

10-15 years ago we were in Las Vegas Wife was doing a spa day or something so I was out mid morning rambling through some shopping center between casinos. I walked by some sports memorabilia store and there was Pete Rose sitting at a table selling autographs. By himself, just him and some young kid over behind the counter. I went in and spoke and he invited me to sit down. I probably sat there 30-45 minutes with him. All he wanted to talk about was how he had been wronged and how nobody knew who he was anymore. He was one bitter man. I left there actually feeling kinda sorry for him. Not a single person came in to buy a signed picture or baseball, me included

I had a similar experience. I was walking thru the shops at the Mandalay Bay and looked over and saw him sitting alone at a table. Nobody in there but Pete and some guy working the store. I bought a hat in the store and then went over to get him to sign it. I was kinda nervous to be honest but he was a very cordial guy and easy to talk too. I asked him a couple of questions and he asked me to sit down so I chatted with him for a few minutes until the next person came in to get an autograph. I asked him would he mind taking a picture with me and he said "sure thing". He was very engaging and one of the nicer celebrities I had ever met. I've met Joe Montana and Jerry Rice. Rice was super nice. Of course, he's a Mississippian so when I told him where I was from he wanted to talk. Guy has the biggest hands I've ever seen on a human. Joe Montana was just the opposite. He was an a'hole. I told Jerry Rice that his QB was an a'hole and he about fell outta his chair laughing. His agent was with him and he told me to tell her what I just said. They both got a kick outta it.

My father was a Big Red Machine fan, so I knew of Charlie Hustle at an early age. Dad and I were reminiscing yesterday when he summed Pete’s later life in just a few words

it was probably NBC.... i can barely remember but they used to actually have Monday Night Baseball on NBC in the mid 70's... i remember Curt Gowdy and Joe Garagiola calling the games...

I recall that Pete was one of the first players to use the head first slide. My little league coach warned all of us that it was dangerous and not to do it

I can remember rushing home from school to catch the Big Red Machine in the WS. Pete was my favorite player on what was my favorite team.
