I have to chuckle at the price of eggs of all things is now some sort of economic benchmark.
I was having the same thoughts until yesterday when my wife literally started rewriting this week's meals based on it.

The St Louis Fed tracks and releases graphs of egg prices. And a bunch of other statistical visualization sites do the same.
Egg prices were one of the loudest complaints about inflation in 2022- there was a ton of discussion on here about egg prices at that time too.
So if its tracked extensively and is a recent pain point, then it makes sense that people focus on it now too.

Thing is, egg prices shot up in 2022 due to a disease outbreak. When that hits somewhere, every chicken is killed. So if it spreads, then there is a shortage of eggs until chicks can start producing again.
The same issue, along with increased seasonal demand, is cited for the current high prices.

So the recent higher egg prices arent really inflation based as much as supply/demand based. This can be easily proven by pointing to egg costs dropping a bunch in 2023 and staying low for much of 2024. Supply increased and prices dropped.

I do agree that its odd that the price of eggs is cited as an economic benchmark or whatever, since the price largely fluctuates outside of what other traditional economic indicators report.

Sucks if you own a restaurant or bakery.
No doubt, just funny to me that of all things, pictures of egg cartons and the prices is what has been chosen for people to "make their point" .... whatever point that might be.

To be honest, I don't really look at prices when I grocery shop and don't buy a lot of eggs but when the egg flap first started I made a point of looking at the prices and they seemed high at maybe 5/6 bucks a dozen. Checked several weeks later and they were 1.99. I never saw any pictures of those .

Um….ok? Because people would be happy with 1.99 eggs and eggs, especially if you cook at home a lot, are a staple item. So yeah, people are going to be upset when they’re quadruple the price.

I do to, especially when you look at the nutritional value of an egg. At $4.50 a dozen, that is .38 cents an egg. I had three eggs and piece of toast this morning. A breakfast that will easily keep me satisfied until lunch was less $3.00, even in these wild and crazy times!

It's just a current example of higher cost of living. Pick anything. It's just meant to be snarky.

The takeaway is that there are plenty of ways to explain why things are the way they are but one thing will always be a constant - the president will get crap for high prices from people that didn't vote for him and his supporters will try explain it away. Biden supporters did it. Trump supporters will do it too when prices increase under his administration. Though I will add that Trump is better than anyone else at making others own a bad thing. Teflon Don is the best earned nickname in politics.

Don't worry, Trump's new fangirl turned talking head say Biden killed millions of chickens and it is his fault. Makes sense. I mean once he decided to be nice and not steal the election this time, in a stroke of selfless behavior the world of politics has never seen before, he had to do something...

Seems that was a poor attempt on my part at a little levity regarding "news" reporting and more specifically some of the economic reporting.
Gas prices have been THE staple of spinning up public outrage my entire life and we don't need eggs in the middle of it.
To be clear, I'm not anti-egg. I just don't think they've earned their way to sit next to gas as an economic indicator.**

Its a good thing the US Government didnt listen to Trump back in December when he said all the drones should be shot down...since they were apparently our drones along with some hobbyists drones.

It seems like what Trump was saying was that the Federal Government should let people know what was flying around and if they didn't have FAA authorization they should be shot down.

When has he posted anything that isn’t? Between his turning everything into a TDS event and him even lamenting Trump surviving his assassination attempt, he’s proving he should be on a watchlist. I’m genuinely concerned about his mental wellbeing.

daughter: dad, can you drive me to Target?
horshack: I would but that is exactly what Trump would want me to do!!!!!
