APBA was the best. Had the '63 and '64 seasons.
My late brother played this as an adult for over 30 years. He was league commissioner (since he was a lawyer) in a league in suburban Philadelphia that included many well known individuals including David Eisenhower and Thatcher Longstreth among others. He told me that when Thatcher (for those who donā€™t know him he once ran for mayor in Philly against Rizzo as a Republican) used to hold the games in his kitchen. He would be dressed in full Phillies uniform and play the star spangled banner before beginning the first game. They would play a full season among them. The Phillies once filmed a video about his league that they showed during rain delays. They had a trophy that rotated among the league champions sort of like the Stanley Cup. It was a big deal to them.

Do kids even play pickup games any more? Or, does everything have to be organized with coaches, parent supervision, uniforms, etc.
Depends on where ya live It seems. Densely populated neighborhoods in the city still do.
More suburban areas it seems the kids are too spread out and need a ride to get anywhere.
And the organized leagues are getting rather expensive, and unfortunately there are kids whose family canā€™t afford for them to participate. šŸ™ e.g. Ice Hockey. šŸ˜³

I have a real passion for cars and driving. When I was 3 or 4 I lusted for this pedal fire truck. It was made of metal, old school 1967. The joy of driving hit me early and never left me. Mom failed me and didnā€™t make it happen for my b day

Some great memories in this thread. For me:

Matchbox and Hotwheels and multiple permutations of the tracks running all over the family room.
Green army men
GI Joe...the big 12" posable figures with the outfits and accessories.
Endless games of "army" with toy guns and forts in the woods

My dad was a chemist (retired now). Growing up in The Bronx in the ā€˜50s, he set up a small chemistry lab in his bedroom. There were practically no regulations for chemical safety back then. As a young teenager, he would take the subway by himself and buy any chemical he wanted at a supplier. He bought sodium cyanide without question. No paperwork. It was just like buying a pack of gum.

My teenage boys play pickup football, basketball, and baseball (mostly HR derby) frequently.

NFL football here. I tried my damnedest to make the 76 Seahawks a contender, but sans a D I was doomed. I got a zillion miles out of SI College Football though.

Talking about pickup games, there were never enough kids in the neighborhoods where I lived to play baseball or other games requiring more than 4 or 5 kids. So we played army, cowboys and Indians, etc. with the few of us that we had on hand. We had Daisy air rifles, not BB guns, so we plugged the end with dirt and shot dirt - we were not the safest of kids.

In high school we played 2 on 1 football, with QB and Receiver against a defender. We did what we had to do.

Those things were great and could really fly. I had an ATV version.
They were the perfect toy - you could race them, run them into walls, and if you were really talented, you could take out your friend's eye with it.

Good clean, wholesome fun back then.
