197: #4 Josh Barr vs. #1 Stephen Buchanan (SB)

This could be interesting, or fun, or something

Per 1
No shots thru 1 min. Stoppage for a poke of SB with 1:02 left. No shots thru 2 min. SB in on a single to a double, Barr with a nice whizzer and he's free. End.

Per 2
SB defers, so Barr takes bottom. Barr to his feet, lifted, and returned. Barr back to his feet, and sort of returned. to his fee again, and they are OOB with 1:27 left. Barr to his feet, and returned. Barr to his feet, back down. Barr works up, turns, and he's out, 1-0. RT @ 1:06 for SB. OOB with 0:52 left. Barr sort of shot, nothing. End. RT @ 1:06 for SB

Per 3
SB takes bottom. SB hits a shoulder roll off the whistle and is out in 4 sec. RT @ 1:02 for SB. 1-1. Barr sort of shoot, nothing. SB shoot, nothing. SB shoot and gets a single, Barr dives through the legs and gets an ankle, and a stoppage with 0:51 for PD. Barr shoots, poorly, SB counters and gets behind for the TD, 1-4. Barr to his feet, but the buzzer sounds. With RT, it's a 1-5 DEC for SB

26-8, PSU
Disappointing but not a surprise.
Tens and Nattys to go

Honestly, I'm more disappointed in Carter's performance than Josh Barr's. Carter had a similar match against Brands. Spoiled fan I guess.

285: #2 Greg Kerkvliet vs. #11 Ben Kueter (BK)

247.2 vs. 235.6

Per 1
Lots of ear-to-ear to start. Kerk with a double and gets behind for the TD, 3-0. BK gets flattened pretty quickly. Eventually he works up a bit, tries to sit out, nothing, and is eventually flattened out again. BK to his knees, and they go OOB with 1:08 left. BK to his feet, and Kerk cuts him, 3-1. Kerk tries a throw-by, nothing. Kerk shoots a single to a double and explodes through for the TD, 6-1. End. RT @ 1:17 for Kerk

Per 2
BK takes bottom. After a bit, Kerk flattens him. Kerk controlling both wrists, and switches to a bow-and-arrow, but loses the ankle. BK not doing a thing on the bottom. Stall warning on BK. BK getting worked over, but not turned. End. RT @ 3:17 for Kerk

Per 3
Kerk takes bottom. Kerk sits out, then to his feet, and he's out, 7-1. RT is locked for Kerk. BK shoots, Kerk counters, and seems to get a TD before they go OOB, but nothing awarded and OOB is blown with 0:59 left. PSU throws a brick, so we're going to video review. After review, no TD, but a stall call on BK, makes it 8-1. Kerk with a nice TD to make it 11-1. And again, BK not doing much on bottom. Kerk trying to tilt him. BK works up and is given an esc with 0:01 left, 11-2. With 3+ in RT, it's a 12-2 MAJ

Final: 30-8, PSU

Boy what a fun match! i had Ironhead synced up for about the first 1/3 of the dual but had too much buffering to listen much past halftime. I will watch the match again with Sparks and Gibbons though, they are not bad as a pair. Barr will get some tutelage from this match, not sure if he’ll take Buchanan next time, but he may see him twice yet.
I was a little surprised with Levi; I thought he’d separate himself a bit but it’s January. No disrespect to Kennedy, and no excuses but I wonder if Levi was 100%. There was a good bit of ‘hand fighting’ which ti me, is another form of stalling, but the Hawks came to scrap. Messenbrink is a real animal! Wow! And SVN, beautiful. Not gonna lie, Kasak surprised me. That Blast double by Kerk was perfect! The team looks really good. Loads of fun to watch!

Buchanan was very effective at putting his hand on Barr's forehead, and keeping a good distance away, which effectively neutralized his neutral attacks. Barr should learn from his riding in the 3rd period. If he rode Buchanan for 7 seconds, then RT would be a non factor. Instead, Buchanan hits a shoulder roll off the whistle, and is out in 4 sec. Josh had to score on his feet after that, and ended up taking a sloppy shot, which Buchanan countered for the only TD in the match. Buchanan wrestled smart, and exhibited his experience. That said, Barr was in the match in the 3rd period, so the potential to flip the results later this season is there.

Haines doesn't mind engaging in head battles, but he usually is effective at clearing his opponent's head control just before he shoots. Kennedy was very good at head (and at times wrist) control, so most of the time Haines shot, Kennedy could stop him before he got in. Kennedy wrestled smart. Levi should learn something from the match for any future matchups between the two.

Just wondering if Levi thought he had RT locked up at the end of his bout. Seemed like he gave up that late escape to Kennedy to lose the major a little easy.

Great match overall.

OKay, I'll admit to going over to Iowa Rivals site to get their take on things. The Cliff notes version is:

Davis ducked the match at 133
Kasak is juiced up somehow, In fact, maybe that's one of the "secrets" of the overall success of the program.
Ferrari will beat CS next time they meet. Ferrari will be a four time national champ.
Barr will never be a four time national champion! That seemed to be a victory lap for them.
David Taylor will siphon off a lot of talent to help bring Penn State down.

I'll respond.

I get that reaction, don't agree with it but get it. But Gabe Arnold....
hahahaha, no. But Teemer is just getting back so next one will be another good one
Ferrari won't see Starocci again cause he's not the starter. Arnold will suffer a bigger loss. Ryder and Ferrari will be good in the future.
Correct. He won't. That's really really hard. But I'd be worried about how close a freshman was to a 6th year senior...
Some, sure. Penn State has so much going for it though that we'll still get a lot of top talent.

Is this what drunk, envious Iowan's do during late January when the corn is in the silo and the sheep (hopefully) are in the barn? 🤷‍♀️
