184: Aaron Brooks (AB) vs. Tyler Dow (TD)

We'll see how AB bounces back after the loss, and then the break.

Per 1
Lots of collar ties and head control thru the 1st minute. Brooks reaches, reaches again, nothing. AB with an ankle pick from his knees for the TD, 2-0. AB trying a lot, but TD fending him off, then OOB with 33 sec left. TD sits out, then back in, and is flattened as AB has a 2-on-1 and tilts him and gets swipes, it's 4NF, 6-0. End. RT @ 1:34 for AB

Per 2
AB takes bottom. He comes around for a quick reversal, 8-0. Now working a half nelson and has it deep, couldn't pin him so takes 4 NF, 12-0. AB tilts him again and has him in trouble, but TD fights it off again, 4 NF makes it a 16-0 TF @ 4:32.

Dean with another tough challenge early in the season.

BA tries a shrug-by and Dean falls on him for the TD, 2-0. Dean throws in a boot, and has a cross body ride. He loses the leg, and BA sits out, now Deanhas a leg and has BA bouncing but a stall warning on Dean and he returns BA to the mat. On the edge, and BA works up, but Dean drops down and controls, and stoppage with 20 sec as they are OOB. BA tries a sit out and then stands and is out in 10 sec, 2-1. End. RT @ 1:35 for Dean

Per 2
Dean takes bottom. Dean quickly, is kind of returned, up and BA's knee buckles as Dean was nearly out, but a stoppage. Warning for Bono as he walked out to center. They gave the reversals it's 4-1. Then BA is up and out, 4-2. BA shoots, nothing. BA reaches, then Dean tries a counter, nothing. 1 min left. Dean reaches, then BA tries a counter double, nothing. Then Dean tries a high crotch, blocked. End. RT @ 1:24 for Dean

Great match overall!
Starocci was wrestling angry and I liked it. Should’ve had the TF imo but oh well.
RBY/AB/Kerk looked their usual untouchable selves as well.
Max relying on the late 3rd bow and arrow drives me nuts but boy is it a sight to see.
I was impressed with SVN even with the loss. Think he held his own and it’ll be helpful long term.
Big story of the night obviously Haines. He looked dangerous out there. 157 top 10 are officially on notice.
Great way to start 2023!

Ironhead didn't interview a coach or a wrestler. Not sure what the problem was. Oh well.

Carter had that last takedown. Rivera didn’t award it. Would have been a TF.

I neglected to DVR the match, so I can't go back and watch it. In real time, I did not think that he (CStar) got the TD before the buzzer.

Tom, I couldn’t watch tonight so I greatly appreciated your fine job. I’m impressed you can watch and type such excellent PBP.

Happy to help. There are matches I miss, and I really appreciate either following them from this board, or reading the PBP on this board afterwards.

Thanks for the kind words.

Observations from an older nongreat former wrestler-Our wrestlers sure set a high bar for quality wrestling. Of the non-number 1 ranked or current returning national champions, I sure was impressed by 1) Beau Bartlett at 141-obviously he was behind national champ Nick Lee and thus had to wrestle at a higher weight class last year but surely he is super competitive, talented. and is a force at 141 2) SVN-man he can wrestle and is quick and has great moves. It appeared that to compete at the highest level he may need to be a bit bigger and stronger-but what potential!! 3) Levi Haines-was he impressive-he is so aggressive and quick, the ceiling is so high for him. Cael has a tough decision here but man Haines appears to be a guy who could be a national champ in the future. Too bad Alex Facundo was out-would have liked to see him against a top wrestler.
We are terrific or very competitive at 9 weight classes (with Haines, Facundo). Cael obviously knows what he is doing to get team ready for March-see what he decides but it sure is entertaining watching the PSU wrestlers compete-they do not stop and want bonus points!!
Sure will be interesting to see Kerkvliet-who is bigger, stronger, and healthier, compete against the other top Big 10 heavyweights!!

Are any others surprised or disappointed by Steen’s performance? I had no expectation of him winning, but I expected him to at least put up some resistance. Steen came to PSU with legit credentials (not as credentialed as Robbie), so my expectation is that he can compete. I realize he’s only a redshirt freshman, so maybe I’m being too harsh, particularly after going against the #5 ranked kid in the country. But I just didn’t think Steen could, would, or should lose 15-0.

Anyone have any thoughts on the Lee brothers? Of course, because their brother is tremendous doesn’t guarantee anything for them. But Joe came in his first year and had a little bit of success, and Matt created some anticipation when he knocked off Julian Ramirez in both their redshirt years (I think), and Julian is now having success. Hamiti is elite, so it’s not fair to judge Matt too critically, it’s just that I’m surprised that neither of the younger Lee brothers have really emerged. I was also mildly surprised that Cael didn’t go with Big Throw Joe against Hamiti, but I guess he wanted to give Matt a shot.

Need to see him versus top 10. Don't burn a shirt for 7th or 8th.
Listening to Cael's recent interview, he said that Levi may not be able to stay at 157. If that is the case it makes perfect sense to pull his shirt now.
