The big difference I see between Haines and Barraclough is that Haines is gonna get bonus points where Barraclough tends to wrestle closer matches. Big difference come tourney time.
That was my point. takedowns, near falls, points.

Are any others surprised or disappointed by Steen’s performance? I had no expectation of him winning, but I expected him to at least put up some resistance. Steen came to PSU with legit credentials (not as credentialed as Robbie), so my expectation is that he can compete. I realize he’s only a redshirt freshman, so maybe I’m being too harsh, particularly after going against the #5 ranked kid in the country. But I just didn’t think Steen could, would, or should lose 15-0.

Anyone have any thoughts on the Lee brothers? Of course, because their brother is tremendous doesn’t guarantee anything for them. But Joe came in his first year and had a little bit of success, and Matt created some anticipation when he knocked off Julian Ramirez in both their redshirt years (I think), and Julian is now having success. Hamiti is elite, so it’s not fair to judge Matt too critically, it’s just that I’m surprised that neither of the younger Lee brothers have really emerged. I was also mildly surprised that Cael didn’t go with Big Throw Joe against Hamiti, but I guess he wanted to give Matt a shot.
Not surprised nor disappointed. Barnett is a very good and deeply experienced wrestler going against a red-shirt freshman who did not get a lot of matches in his redshirt year. Most of Steen's bouts have been close but that is because he hasn't been turned even though he struggled to get out from bottom. Barnett is very good on top and his technique for riding and turning is obvious.
I thought Steen displayed mental toughness and continued to fight and improve his position regardless of the score. He was pretty close to an escape multiple times, but Barnett's mat returns were well executed. Steen, in my opinion, was NOT giving up when it was a 14 point difference. Barnett came to his feet and Steen could have just let him go and called it a night. If I remember correctly, he executed his own mat return. Didn't last long and Barnett escaped, but he wrestled hard the whole match.
For Steen to get wins, he needs to earn the first takedown and ride a little. He needs to end the first period up 2-0, 2-1, or even 3-3/0-0. He just doesn't have the experience/execution to come from behind.
**Edited my posted. Missed a "not" which totally changes the context of my statements.

I was impressed with Haines. His pace and style (not the moves) reminded me of Zain, Nolf, and Lee in their 1st years. I'm going to let it fly and go get it. If I give up points, oh well. I'm going to be aggressive both on my feet and on the mat.
As Cael has said many times, give us some tape to coach against. He gave them plenty of tape to help him improve his technique.
Model has solid national ranking. He qualified for NC's last year and off to good start this season. This isn't a premiere win. Looked over Model's bout scores this year and last. He only has 1 victory over wrestlestat top 20 opponent. The surprising outcome last night was the MD. Wisky is pretty sound. Even if they are out-classed, they make their opponent work hard for bonus point victories. Haines seemed like he was hellbent on not letting match be slowed down. He attacked over and over except for about 45 seconds where it looked like he hit a wall and then got a second wind. Doing it on the road also impressive (not Carver Hawkeye) but still not at Rec with home crowd cheering you on.
Too bad he didn't wrestle Humphreys. Would be telling to see him again Lewan in 2 weeks.

I'll start with saying I have no inside knowledge. With respect to reshirt burning for Haines at 157 and future years/weights. Looking at who is on the roster now and what is committed.
Hypothetical situation for next season.
Max graduates - 197 is vacant
Brookes goes up to 197
CStar goes up to 184
Facundo goes up to 174
Haines grows into 165
Bearclaw at 157 or Van Ness goes up to 157
Kasak wrestles as true freshman at 149.
OR - maybe not. Lot of other permutations possible with guys staggering red shirts across this range of weights. It starts with the premise though of Haines burning redshirt this year and continuing to grow, making it difficult to stay at 157.

I don't see it happening next year. I don't think Brooks and Starocci cutting much wieght

Need to see him versus top 10. Don't burn a shirt for 7th or 8th.
Class-wise, Haines is a true freshman but experience-wise he's beyond that, having performed extremely well versus major-college-level competition while wrestling unattached in open tournaments during what would otherwise have been his Senior season in high school. If his redshirt is ultimately burned I don't think we're looking at 7th or 8th, probably more in the 3rd - 4th - 5th range.

Would love to see SVN to get bigger. Appears to be on the smaller side for 149.

Haines one takedown was really impressive. He stoned Model's attempt and Haines barely had his arms on Model's hips and he just started to ratchet further and further till he had a good grip and then he found a way to lift him. As you said, it looked like he was gassed at one point and then he wasn't. Fun wrestler to watch.
