Pirates fans are fortunate that the team in the NL Central, where they're chasing the Cardinals and Cubs, and maybe the Brewers. They are miles behind those teams, but imagine being in the NL East chasing the Braves, Mets, and Phillies, or the NL West chasing the Dodgers and Padres.

This is the only part of your post with which I disagree.

PR move for sure which will certainly resonate with fans. Still, he's a great teammate who will bring a great professional presence to the clubhouse even if he is at the end of his career. Maybe some of his approach will rub off on Bryan Reynolds and make the younger man focus on the game instead of wanting out of town.

If ever a team needed positive PR, it's the Pirates.

Bringing back McCutchen may resonate well with some "fans", but my memories of his prior stint was over a highly gifted baseball player who just wouldn't do certain things offensively that would help the team in certain situations.

I never saw him bunt. I never saw him move up a runner by hitting to right field.

I did see him pop up with runners in scoring position.

Maybe, just maybe he has matured in his past several seasons. I hope so.

If nothing else, a good PR move.

I haven't been to a game in years and had no desire to go this season until I heard this news. This is still a bad baseball team but McCutchen is enough to get me to at least consider going to a game or two.

You're assuming that Reynolds isn't traded soon, a distinct possibility given what the Pirates appear to be asking for him.

Disagree. He carried that team through good and bad. He seems like an even better human being. You know what would have helped the team even more in certain situations? Not having a dead beat owner that is only concerned about padding his pockets instead of winning. Nutting is a poor excuse of an owner and should be run out of town.

This mirrors my experience over the last two or three years.

Ya know, Us Pirates fans know going in the ownership sucks beyond suck and we can expect at best to win 70 games. But….. we have a lot to celebrate. Great nights out at the stadium, great broadcasting team, a few players worthy of discussion, a stadium that is easy to drive to for many…. Do we wish the club was more competitive? Sure. It’s not. Accept it and enjoy what is available to enjoy.

It’s a Tuesday night in July, it’s 82 degrees, the beer is cold, the aroma of Stadium food wafting through the air, some local high school group or young college person singing the National Anthem, the grass is green, the skyline lit up, a chance to see a quality opponent…..

For a date night with Mrs Fairgambit that comes in under $ 100.00 what’s not to like other than the ownership? ( yes, it took Tgar a while to get past that but once he did he is glad he took the step )

See ya at the Ballpark. Tgar has them on every night in the background when in Pittsburgh, one night he/ we figured what the hell…. (Same for his lovely wife) and we keep our expectations real. Have fun.

Pirates would benefit a lot if they were in the same division as the Phillies as they should be soon I think.

Nutting would get millions more out of it. What it's all about. That dickwad needs to be exercised out of baseball. He makes more from other teams than he pays for the roster. It is just so bad when a guy like Cuban would be more than happy to run the team right.

I wish I could, but life is too short to waste my money and time on a bad baseball team. Even when I've been offered free tickets I have turned them down. I would much rather spend my time on a good book or just a quiet evening with friends.

You make a great pitch but as I just noted, life is too short to watch bad baseball, despite the ambiance. Having had the benefit of season tickets growing up, I've watched over a thousand Pirate games in my lifetime. I have many fond memories, but watching this team is not a good experience for the Gambits.

Let me add something else. I am grateful for fans like you who still support the team. I would hate to see them leave town. It is a comfort to me knowing they are still here and that some day.... perhaps....we will have an owner who cares enough to put a competitive product on the field.

Great move by the Bucs. They will still suck but this is probably the only move they could have made that will bring fans back to their games - me included.

@IrishHerb told me the story of him once going to Camden Yards and seeing a mutual friend sitting in the box seats. The friend is deaf-blind, and is with someone who’s giving him the play-by-play. Art, for that was the man’s name, told Herb why a blind man would go to a baseball game: “You feel the sun, have a cold beer and a hot dog, smell the popcorn and the peanuts, and follow the game.” Cool story.

Nutting has suggested in the past that at some point he will pass the team down to his kids. We are screwed for generations to come. MLB really needs to do 2 things: 1) force his sorry *** out. 2) implement a salary cap. MLB is the only major sport without it and it shows.

Art was a great guy. Didn't let his deafness nor blindness stop him from doing anything. Could still see just enough during his college days, so played football (center) with me. After graduating he became completely blind ... still loved sports so much that he went skiing a couple of times, played golf, attended sporting events. Even dunked our president twice in one of those dunk tank things ... he had 3 balls and from "regulation" distance and someone pointing out the directions missed by inches on his first throw, and hit the target on both of his next two.

The players union caving last spring killed us pirate fans. They were going to address owners like Nutting not spending enough money to field a competitive team year after year after year.
