No. There any number of reasons that players make mistakes. They are first of all human. If a student doesn't answer every question on a test correctly should we fire the teacher? Obviously, if there is widespread issues it's a different story. I once lost a championship game because a player stunted into the wrong gap. We employed what was known as a 6-5 goal line defense and planned to use it on short yardage. My right safety had stunted successfully as schemed on 3 previous occasions and we had denied our opponents a first down each of the 3 times. On the 4th time we called it, the safety took one gap inside and the play went thru his assigned gap for a touchdown. Players aren't computer components....did he simply draw a blank.....did he think he could penetrate easier between the guard and tackle....who the hell knows. You share the tape and hope that everyone learns. I'm sure every game at every level has dozens of such player errors. Some are not noticed. Others can lead to a painful result. Every coach works to minimize mental errors.
In the case in question, it could have been as simple as getting the defensive call confused. Why do players false start?
Everything isn't an indictment of coaching.
