I attended a Blair County Sports Hall of Fame banquet where Stan served as MC. Told some great JoePa stories. Had the whole place laughing. Always liked him ... good guy. Prayers for a quick recovery.
Sad news. Grew up watching him on WTAE (which was pretty much the flagship pitt station) and listening to him on TCS.
IIRC KDKA was more the PSU station but I used to love watching WTAE and Bill Hillgrove after PSU would beat pitt.
I had the same reaction. I would have guessed that he was at least 5 yr's older.
But he was the best that we've had in Pgh (& he was great in his run at PSU). Wishing him all the best

the cancer has not spread from the one lung, doctors tell Savran the prognosis is good and, all things considered, he’s “doing great!” Treatments will continue through the end of the year and then, “life will go on,” Savran said.

Yep, that's about the only time a PSU fan could stomach Hillgrove.
Do you remember Bill Curry? He was colorful with the sports report, before a couple clicks and 15 seconds on the internet got you everything the network news would say in 5 minutes with commercials sandwiched in......
I’ll echo a lot of what has been posted. Stan has always been able to walk the line of being a fair-minded voice for whatever home team he was broadcasting. He was a fan without being a fanatic, and always did his homework about the opponent. A true sports journalist-turned-broadcaster. Hope he pulls through this.

Hillgrove was doing the Panther something or another show when Pitt really was stinking the outhouse. When he announced the show was being cancelled, it looked like he was going to croak right then and there.
I think there is some confusion with Bill C’s with the way the name was originally presented. Bill Currie was the colorful blazer wearing Pittsburgh news sportscaster. Bill Curry was the former cfb coach turned ESPN analyst more nationally known.First thought, didn't associated Bill Curry with the internet

Stan is a talented sports caster. Probably the best currently in the Pittsburgh market. I remember when he teamed up with Myron Cope on a nightly talk show. Their show was much better than anything on the airways today.
Yep, he was an icon. I loved Ray Scott and won't quibble if someone wants to put him at the top.
Ray had a national presence that Stan lacks. He called Super Bowls and major college bowl games. In many ways their styles were similar. The focus was on the game, not themselves. I prefer Stan but he is from my generation while Ray was from my parent's.
