Is that an average of in/out of state tuition? Or just in-state? I personally think it's insane to attend PSU; were it not for it's idyllic 'college town' setting, I'd probably never bother to go back as an alum. It's a massive investment/cost without a tangible ROI (though the 'personal' experience may be worth it) that seems more like a degree factory than a rigorous academic institution that challenges and rewards students. Penn State has a ton to offer but I have no idea how we can have the highest paid university president with the worst (or near) reputation in our academic peer group (other B1G Schools) - unless academics aren't a priority.

Not related to the topic of the thread but the 72,229 undergraduate number for PSU has got to including all campuses, right? There's not that many undergrads at University Park alone.

From the Penn State Admissions Q&A page:

Q: Is student aid available, and if so, how does one apply for it and what is the average amount awarded per student?

A: 🤣

Numbers are from the Department of Education so they are probably about as close to an apples-to-apples comparison that we'll see. It's also the net cost of attendance.

"The average annual cost is the average net price for students for one academic year of study after applying scholarships and other forms of financial aid. The cost includes the average price of tuition, fees, books, and supplies, as well as living costs at the school.

Cost for public schools represents in-state students, the Department of Education said"

Not just PSU, but everywhere. A lot of schools have moved away from the idea of being an affordable and accessible option primarily for use by in state students. Extended family live in Maryland and getting into Univ Maryland seems to be much tougher for in state nowadays than out of state students.

Also, as expensive as PSU is for a public, IIRC it's mostly due to the high in state tuition rate. Out of state rates are more comparable to other similar public schools (on the high side, but not multiple standard deviations different).

This is more than a bit outdated, but the concept has not changed....

Yep, the most important number on the application for admission is the zipcode.
Do schools like PSU prefer out of country cash paying students or gullible "sign here kid" full-on student loan kids? I would assume the former.

I believe your last point is correct but many schools offer up academic scholarships to offset, which I’ve read here, is extremely limited at PSU.

Cash is king.
Yeah, my turf biz quotes were like a gas station. Check or CC +3-5%. Once I got to know the customer, a third option could emerge. Cash (cash, cash, not a check) would go a long way in meeting budgets.

Pretty sure I know where those mason jars are. Hope so anyway.

Believe that international students pay higher tuition. But PSU is indifferent as to whether someone pays cash on the barrel head or borrows; it receives the same amount either way.

"It's the state's fault for not providing more money!!!!"

Says the BOT that rubber stamped the art museum and other extravagant projects

Multiple things could be true at once though. Wildly inappropriate budgets and approved projected are certainly not unique to PSU among educational institutions.

Is there any handy numbers on state allocations to PSU compared to (Say) other Big Ten schools?

That's plums and pluots. Remember that PSU is state-related, not a state school, and that a series of PSU administrations have hid behind that distinction to not open up their books

Penn State needs Pennsylvania’s money, not its two cents.

I, and both my daughters, graduated from Penn State. My oldest granddaughter, who was 2nd in her class at a high school in New Jersey, and was very active (sports, debate, chorus, etc.), applied to Dear Old State and was offered no scholarship money as in -0-.
She was accepted at a smaller, higher rated school in Ohio and got a very generous scholarship package. She has since graduated near the top of her class, now lives in Ohio, and gives generously to her Alma Mater.

I’d be eating out of a dumpster if I had kids and they wanted to follow my shallow footsteps and attend college.

I resemble that remark. Or should I say.

Daughter starts this fall. Ugh.
Yeah. I have a freshman there now. Are there cheaper schools, sure. Are there more expensive schools? Absolutely. Some of the more expensive schools do give financial aid and then it brings the price down to approximately the same price as PSU. Quite honestly, through our experience and that of our friends, most of the cost is very similar everywhere. Unfortunately, a few on here want to lead you to believe PSU is a horrendously horrible place. I don’t get it and I’ve refrained from responding to a few out of fear of saying something I would regret. Good luck to your daughter. Regardless of what others here may tell you, she is still making a good choice.
