Penn State’s drop in academic rankings is the worst in the nation. How bad is it? – BARRY FENCHAK

"Penn State must first confront these realities. We have to own the actions which have brought us to this point. The past is behind us, but it’s not very far behind us. We can’t rely on our “brand” to save us, nor can we wallow in paralyzing despair over how far we have fallen. Instead we can draw on our illustrious history for inspiration and face the challenges ahead."

Flat out disgusting. So they can find $700m for the stadium yet they can't kick an extra $10k to Pell Grant kids?
I know Alvin deLevie is up for reelection next year and will be popping up on here wanting votes. Brandon Short, same thing. They better have answers.
Thanks for this Barry.

Just curious. Out of the 38 trustees, why did you single out these two?

Check out the acceptance rates. Maryland’s is 52%, PSU’s is 92.3%.

55% for UP.

The link I provided says “PSU Main Campus.” I suspect that the 55% is the correct number. (One, the 55% is not made up, and, two, the 52-92 difference is just way too large.)

No way UP is 92%. It’s never been anywhere near that high since I went there.

FWIW:
IPEDS data includes all of PSU undergraduate population.
Where can we find acceptance data for UP?

Also, it's a really bad look that the data says Main Campus. @manatree could you please track down someone on campus to get this corrected. Preferably by correcting the acceptance rate and not by changing the campus distinction.

Yeah, I thought the same. We don’t want misleading numbers out there.

Penn State is a semi-public university. Having attended some of the hearings that were called in response to the 2011 mess, I can verify that Penn State is in no way responsive, or especially interested in, the Legislature’s opinion on any topic. That favor is returned by the Legislature.

Secondarily, Higher Ed needs to shrink in general. Sending additional monies to any Higher Ed institution, merely ensures that additional Assistant Deans to the Associate Deans will be added.

I’d be in favor of expanded grants/loans to students directly. Let them choose where to spend their dollars.

Finally, what is the direct relationship postulated between academic quality and Pell Grant graduation rates?

Good grief that’s pathetic
That has been PSU's excuse for decades. The difference between it and virtually every other state school is accountability for the money provided. PSU has relatively none. There was at least one significant effort to change that relationship (more money in exchange for greater accountability) years ago and PSU dismissed it out of hand.

Seems like between the BOT and the PA State Legislature that leadership is in short supply, not that that's a big surprise.

The one initiative with which I'm familiar took place in the mid-80s. Not sure if the BoT was involved and my source is no longer around to ask. Bryce Jordan was president and a trial balloon was floated by a group of legislators. Didn't last very long before it was shot down by PSU's administration.

You're right, I left out Wagman, Mr Alumni Association. My bad. They're all up for reelection next year and will be groveling for votes. They've all sat their with their thumbs up their butts voting YEAH for everything they're told to. Thank God for Nebraska.

Well Thank you for the response. In my mind these newer positions have very little pull. My scorn is for the established cronies that have been hanging around for years and not being held accountable for doing a crap job.

I’m going to burn myself down to the ground. Much easier than all of Penn State.

US News and World Report rates PSU tied for 9th among the 13 public Big 10 schools and tied for 31st overall in their ranking nationwide of public institutions. It’s not strong, but it’s less dismal than the perennial naysayers who have an agenda would have you believe.

Also. the Pell grant drop out data is fairly meaningless. Many low income students during Covid may have chosen to attend community colleges virtually free as an alternative to spending money on tuition at a four year school like PSU. These data are not likely reflected in the tables reported.

Penn State leadership across several administrations has wanted to have their cake and eat it too

"Give us state money but don't expect us to be accountable to or transparent with the state"

Love the idea of giving state grants directly to students!
