QB Controversy Brewing?

While I admit I am all for Wes being QB after what he did last season, rumor is Tyson Lee is lighting it up and turning heads at practice. Heard he has quick feet and a rocket arm that he used to pick apart our #1 D enroute to multiple scores. Thoughts?

I have never heard of anyone talking about how well Wes practices. Of course I could have missed this. Wes didn't look rattled in most of our games and that was something severely needed after our start this past season.

I am all for some competition at the QB ranks but I am a firm believer that some people just play better in the games than others, regardless if they are great in practice. I will add that you should at least be able to practice reasonably well to perform come game time but practicing "great" just doesn't always translate to the playing field.

...if we have learned anything, it's that Croom is loyal to his starting quarterback. I expect that barring injury, Carroll will be the guy.

I agree Wes will be our go to guy, but at least it sounds like we may have some opitons (unlike years past). Also heard that Bonner and Ducre have been work horses at practice, bringing the pain to anybody who gets in their way. If all this is true could be really exciting next year.

until he turns Furboy on us and starts playing like absolute ****. I'd like to see a strong year out of him and keep this Lee guy waiting in the wings in case Carroll goes down.

It's almost certian our QB will get hurt next year. It's very hard to go through the SEC season with One QB.
Only a few teams were able to do it last year. I hope one of our back ups is decent. We will need him.

becomes a viable option, we have big problems, i.e. Carroll & Riddell are out for the season. I know Lee put up ungodly stats in JUCO, but the SEC is another level. Having an occasional trick play for Lee to run as a change of pace is one thing; having him be the starter is another matter entirely. Maybe he turns out to be the greatest walk-on ever and takes command of the starting position on his way to leading us to be the SECWest champs, but I doubt it.

It is always good to hear about positive practice reports about players, but it is just spring practice and MSU has had numerous years where players were all world in spring & fall practice only to fall off the face of the earth during the season.

It seems our walk-on receivers have been the most reliable WR's. Would not surprise me if it ends up being the case with the QB as well.

have been our best overall WR the past couple of years. However, I believe that is more due to Croom's inability thus far to sign any legit HS WR more than it is the talent of our walk-ons. If Henig was still our only option, then I would have no problem with going with a walk-on. However, Carroll seems to be a pretty heady & cool, calm, collected type of QB. He doesn't have all world talent or abilities, but he seems to play smart & within his abilities for the most part. Seeing him replaced by a walk-on would mean big problems in my opinion. On top of that, we have Riddell behind Carroll who showed flashes of ability in his limited PT last year. My point is we seem to have two legitimate D1 QBs on the roster right now vs our WR where we had at most 2 or 3 legit D1 players in a position where you need many more.

and thought Tyson looked better than Relf and Carroll in both drills and the scrimmage. He seems to be more mobile than the other QBs and throws a really pretty ball. His arm looks stronger than Carroll and he appeared to be more accurate than Relf (who looked like he could throw the ball to West Point if he wanted to). I understand the coaches like what they have seen in Lee and the players, particularly the WRs, like him alot.

Of course, that was only one practice - but it is what it is.

when has the last time MSU EVER had this problem? Seems like just a few months ago we were all bitching about having no depth at QB. Now obviously it remains to be seen how good these guys are in game situations but I like that fact that we are even having this conversation.

Honestly, I'm going to say 2001 with Madkin and Fant along with Brandon Butler as a promising talent. Heck, I was so wooly then, I thought Curtis Kemp was a legit option if both went down.

our basketball players? I would say that Ben and Barry have destroyed that theory this year anyway.

...it's rumored our best option offensively is to have a walk-on quarterback throwing to walk-on receivers.
