I feel like I should know this, but does RAT stand for random ******* theory? Couldn’t remember the last word. Also, is that a SixPack or Mississippi State original. Was a little scared to Google it on my work computer, but didn’t see much when I googled it on my phone

Yes, that is what it stands for and yes it's original to MSU.

If memory serves correctly it came up during the Xavier game in the tournament many moons ago. Could have been before but that's when I first remember it.

First I remember was a South Carolina football game we were winning and their qb got hurt. They put in some random ahole and he completed a game winning touchdown pass.
Yeah you may be right I seem to remember that too. My brain is hurting now.

Have we ever had a RAT ruin someone else's party? Maybe Key Thompson leading us over Lamar Jackson and Louisville in 2017 Gator Bowl?
What immediately comes to mind is RAT king Tanner Leggett. Can you imagine how Texas felt when some tiny (sorry Mr. Leggett) pinch hitter comes in and ropes a drive in left center to send them home and us to the championship series.

That QB was the king of RATs. Dude comes in and throws a perfect TD pass and is never heard from again. I believe he may have played a few downs in mop up duty for a non-SEC game after that.

My memory was that he was their third string. I feel like one of the QBs above him was recently out prior to the game and the other got injured during the game, but I was also like 15 and don’t remember

#3 on UL-L in basketball in 2002. Boyd, maybe?
That guy.

We were preseason ranked No. 12 (an oddity in basketball) and opened the season against a middle of the pack ULL team. We had a finger up that kids nose and he dropped 33 on us. Hit nine three pointers that night.

Brad Boyd was his name.

He's a high school basketball coach now.

This is right answer.
No way he should have completed that pass!

He wasn't a total random but I'll always think of Bobby Dalbec in the 2016 Super as a RAT, dude played out of his freaking mind that weekend

Ha. A walk-on off the bench drops a dime. The most Mississippi State thing ever.

Also, a documentary being done on that pass is wild.
Here's a vid of that game. Go to 2:34:08 to see the play where the starting QB gets hurt (hyperextended knee). The very next play (4th and 10), their backup QB comes in and drops a dime to their WR from 25 yards out.

You're welcome.

2000 MSU football was 8-4 lost 3 games by a total of 18 points - this crap at USCE 23-19, LSU 45-38 in overtime in Red Stick, & Arkansas in Starkville 17-10 in OT plus 45-30 @ Ole Miss in a torrential downpour (Wayne Madkin flu game). It was really a weird season - crazy weather with hottest game I've ever attended @ Memphis, near monsoon level rain @ Ole Miss, & The Snow Bowl plus 3 overtime games. What could have been in 2001?

That Virginia pitcher in Omaha that was a nobody and pitched 8 scoreless innings against us was close to becoming a rat

The Random ******* Theory is only applicable when you have a reasonable expectation of success. RAT is not a factor when you are a 38.5 underdog. I think we might be a good case study for The Peter Principle right now, though.

In the early 2000s, I thought maybe it was a Vanderbilt guard who, for one night, could shoot anything and make them into three-pointers. My brain went so dead from the experience that I cannot remember his name. All I know is he could've given Steph Curry a run for his money that night.

Shan Foster 2008 is maybe the game you’re thinking of. But he was SEC POTY so not really a RAT.

That Foster game is the craziest thing I’ve ever seen. We were defending him air tight half the time and he was still making them.

This is 100% correct. I was there. Trace it back to the beginning and there's an ezboard post I made about it, if those are even still searchable.

I remember this.

After Boyd lit us up, someone posted on the old board that anytime we are ranked or we think we have a game in the bag, some random ******* comes out of no where with a career game to ruin it for us. Then people starting talking about the all the times it’s happened to us.

Boyd was the catalyst to come up with the RAT.
