Ray Tanner’s expectations for the football program.

I don’t like making posts but something Tanner said alarmed me. Out of boredom I was watching random Carolina stuff on YouTube. I came across Tanner talking about the Beamer hire. And explaining what he told Beamer his expectations were for the football program. Tanner said I told Beamer that “I would like the team to make the post season”. Beamer responds with “every year”. And Tanner’s response was “I’d like for em’ to”.

Not a National Championship.

Not a conference championship.

Not even being ranked top25.

Just to simply…. Make a bowl game….

Just to sometimes maybe make it to the post season. Basically, a Coach under Tanner just has to make a Bowl Game and they are good. This isn’t ok! Skip to the 2 minute mark. I had to stop watching at that point. Not sure what he said the rest of the video.

I think that's probably a good initial goal. Let's work on getting to bowl games regularly, then moving on to winning 8 or 9 games. If we can do that consistently, then Atlanta and the playoff become real objectives.

Tanner holding Beamer to making the playoff at this point would be an absurd standard.

Am I missing something? It sounds like Tanner is talking about Paris, not Beamer. Making the NCAA tournament every year should be the goal. There is nothing wrong with that objective. In response to Tanner's stated expectations, Paris responded, "I have a habit of being in the post season." That does not sound like a coach who is afraid not meeting expectations.

Ray Tanner is always a class act when he speaks. It's nice to make it to a bowl game but that's not in anyway representative of being a good team IMO. We've made 4 bowl games since Spurrier and haven't been close to being ranked or a good team. A better measure for success would be to become competitive on a consistent basis in the SEC. Making low-tier bowl games does seem to keep a segment of the fanbase happy though.

That was about Paris. He's standing in the background to the right.

Class act?

Strongly disagree. Very strongly.

Any examples you care to share from a pure communication standpoint?
Yes. I’ve posted this before. Back when he first became AD he came to a Gamecock meeting in ATL. It was in the midst of the 11-win seasons. Anyway, he’s talking about all of the construction that was ongoing or planned. Essentially, he was talking about Hyman’s master plan. But, instead of putting on a slick slide show, he was holding the placards above his head at a cockeyed (no pun) angle. Most couldn’t see them. I’m not allowed to explain how he sounded and how unprofessional the entire presentation was. Last time I described it, I used a word the Mods didn’t like.

Let’s just say my high school aged daughter would have done a much better and more professional job than the guy essentially running a $100MM corp. The same guy who should have been canned when Muschamp was fired. I thought Tanner’s wagon was tied to Muschamp?

They've been whipped, beaten down, and afraid to aspire to better.

Perhaps it was Hyman's fault that there was no presentation available shortly after Tanner took over as AD. Because Tanner has had an excellent one for years now. He is great with the large donors, their financial advisors, accountants and tax attorneys. That is why much if not most, of Hyman's Master Plan is complete.
At the time Tanner took over not much on that plan was actually being implemented or any timetable for its implementation, except for the Dodie which Spurrier spearheaded the funding for.
