Realistic improvements that would make Starkville a kick-*** college town....

Not that it isn't nice already, but there's alot of room for improvement. With the bypass, this new square thing Dan Camp is doing, and the new sports bar, Starkville might start to approach being cool. What are some other ideas that may be possible?

Mine:
-Buffalo Wild Wings in the Burger King building
-I really like that sports bar in Oxford that's right in the open on the corner, don't know where a good location for that would be in Starkville, I guess Cotton District
-Some type of resort on the Tenn-Tom

hmmm.....
1. a mall maybe? (would help attract co-eds)
2. few more sports bars (so yes: BWW/Hooters would be nice)
3. Nicer restaurants
4. Sammy's

- destruction of all logo-type cars to keep football players safe

- Beef O'Brady's in Burger King building. Not a BW3's fan. Sorry Goat.

- A large mall so that I don't have to hear women ***** about it anymore.

- A NASCAR track.....wooohooo! /not really.

edit: better and more bike and hiking trails at the Refuge.

And by Sammy's you mean strip club? That idea seems to fail in college towns.

in Starkville on a Friday or Saturday (or a Sunday afternoon) without passing through a couple of roadblocks, as you well know.

I get sick of it.

can't remember ever going to one in say, Chapel HIll, or Athens, though they surely have one. Hell, the point of a college town is to scope college chicks, and I don't think they flock to Hooters. BWW- yes.

that Hooters will not consider Starkville until alcohol can be sold on Sunday.

A Hooters would be nice here, but if the above rumor is true, we'll never get one.

BWW won't build in Tupelo because of the Sunday alcohol thing so you can forget about them as well.
I think the best thing that can be done is add more bars/restaurants in a central location (i.e. the square in Oxford). The cotton district and downtown touch on this but need more.

I.e., better sports bars, possibly even bars in general. It's been noted several times that BWW won't come to a place where there are no alcohol sales on a given day.

Anything that would keep more students in town on the weekends would be a start... this wouldn't hurt.

I was being very sarcastic. Hooters, BWW and malls sound are so generic.

how anyone could associate malls, hooters and BWW with great college towns is beyond me.

Continued development of downtown and the Cotton District with locally owned restaurants/bars/shops - not a bunch of chain stores.

In other words, keep doing what you're doing. From an outsider's perspective, Starkville seems to have gotten on the right track the last few years. It's seems a lot cooler now than it was the first time I visited the town in the late 90's.

The Sunday sales issue is gaining momentum. I predict a referendum next year.

Downtown and the CD are landlocked. No more development.

The new development of the old theatre/Cooley building is agoing to happen and will be a bad *** area.

The old State shopping cewnter is being re done and will be bad ***.

Once the Hilton Garden opens...expect the bypass area to gain speed

The old sak and save has been re done and looks fantastic.

The farmers market opens next month.

School bond issue passed ande work has already started.

"The Jewel" is shining mofos!!! So bright you cant see!!!

Anyone have any insight on this:

I haven't been to Starkville since the Egg Bowl, but from what I can gather this project is still moving at a snail's pace. Someone even said the work on the HG in Meridian started after the one in Starkville and it has been open for a year already. What's the hold up?

Starkville just needs to continue to work on the cotton district. Loosen the liquor laws and get more bars in there. Does Starkville still have that law about you must serve food to serve liquor? Get rid of that one if so. Continue to hype up Bulldog Bash and have other festivals during the spring and summer. Good start with the Johnny Cash thing.

The only thing that will bring in more chains and resorts would be land more industry to keep graduates from leaving the area for the jobs in the big city. Keep the graduates at home. The population grows. Then the malls spring up and the assistant coaches wives are happy.

giving 40-something year old sports writers something to do when they come up for games, instead of whining about how boring it is.

Hooters or Buffalo Wild Wings aren't coming to Starkville or Oxford if they can't serve beer on Sundays. Sundays during football season is when they make serious bank.

there will be someone pushing urban in-fill (like the cotton district and Main St.) and not suburban sprawl (the bypass).

People just have to warm up to the idea of living in NE Mississippi. I like the area myself. Of course, I'm one of those weird types that likes North Alabama too, which is essentially the same sort of thing.

just reopen the old XXX drive-in and serve hot wings and beer.

I too am against the generic chain sports bars, restaurants, malls, etc. A good, locally owned sports bar w/ msu stuff, autographed jerseys located in an existing building downtown would probably fly.

Good luck walking to a game or decent (not chain) restaurant from the HWY 82 bypass.

I would rather we fill up the available land we have near the campus before we start expanding outward.

You definitely have to change the booze on Sunday laws... You will increase business exponentially. You will never get big sports bars in Starkville without booze on Sundays. That is when they do most of their business. Get that law change and Starkville will be an amazing place to go to college.

however we can get it. The BWW, malls, etc. could easily be replaced with locally owned stuff and I'd be even happier. I just want more **** to do, more people, more folks spending $$$$. I agree with filling up the land close by, because right now it's being wasted. But why not have sprawl for the people who want it? As long as it's aesthetically pleasing, if that's even possible.

I spoke to them a few years back about a piece of land to put one on close to campus. Hooters does not like college towns, said they never preform that well for them.

An English/Irish Pub near downtown. Not sure if they have anything like this now, but it needs to be authentic. Guinness or Boddington's and at least 5 other real beers on tap plus serving pub fare. Don't try to make it some upscale thing.
Make the physical transition from the university to the town more natural and pedestrian friendly. This is one thing that gives other SEC college towns a good feel. I can't think of another school where you have to cross a busy divided highway to get from the football stadium to a bar, though the bridge over Hwy 12 is a good start.
Do they still have those University owned apartments on University Drive? That's prime real estate that could be used for some kickass improvements.
On campus bars. This is a pipe dream, but we would definitely lose our bottom of the SEC image if this were a reality. At least put one just off campus within walking distance of Engineering Row.
At least 5 more good restaurants that aren't major chains. Small regional chains are acceptable.
