Realistic improvements that would make Starkville a kick-*** college town....

The Sports bar issue will be resolved by Mid-Summer with Cowbells, a massive sportsbar that will hold upwards of 800 at highlands. For many of you that don't live in Starkville, Highlands has almost ( I said almost, not has) passed the Cotton district as "the place" to live and there is construction like crazy adding to it. It should have around 5k renters by January living inside the gates. So moving that direction is what is happening not what might happen. Many of the shops/ restaraunts within walking distance are being resolved with the convention center/ high end condo deal going on in the old physical plant location. It is with the board of alderman now, you can follow that mess at www.starkvillenow.com , there is links and diagrams and everything...Finally enrollment is the key. As more students move here more of everything else comes with them. Enrollment was up last year by 1,000 and is expected to follow that trend this fall as well. In short, Starkville is getting there, faster now than in my 16 years here, just stick with it and it will be there soon!

I might be operating off of the "ignorance is bliss" theory because I haven't eaten at high dollar restaurants in big cities (save one in NY), but there are several in Jackson that are all I could need

Chain bars do not make for 'kick-*** college towns'. You go to Eskimo Joe's in Stillwater, Parrish's or Larry's in Oxford... good college towns have locally owned bars, not chains.

If Starkville got both a Hooters and a Buffalo Wild Wings, it wouldn't be any closer to a 'kick-*** college town', and it'd still be mocked for its lack of culture. Probably more so, at that.

was probably the best meal I've had in my life. But I don't think there's demand back home for something like that.

I agree we don't need a Hooters. I want a Buffalo Wild Wings because they seem to do the whole "sports bar" thing right. If we could get a locally owned sports bar that did what it needs to do (namely be able to show me any televised sporting event that I go there to see while providing good bar food and reasonably priced beer), then that would be all the better. Right now, we don't even have what you could call a sports bar, much less a good sports bar.

...but for God's sake don't encourage the spread of bland, Midwestern chain restaurants. When it started in Ohio, btw, it was actually "Buffalo Wild Wings and Weck", weck being an ohio sausage sandwich or something. I work with a guy who used to go there when it was a hole in the wall.

Think about how it'd actually be. It'd be another chain on 12 that you have to go drive to, and drive from, and as it's owned by a corporation and not a local, it both doesn't return as much money to the city and its management lacks the motivation to really add character to the city. When you're there, you'll only know you're in Starkville because they'll throw some MSU **** on the wall. Like I said earlier, what'd do Starkville good is to have lots of stuff all within walking distance. That downtown strip could be badass if developed right. Just throw four or five good, local bars on one road and you're set. A nice place with a patio upstairs, or windows that open all the way on nice days is great, and it's even better if there's something like downtown scenery to look at. Just anything besides a typical parking lot.

I get so sick of not being able to walk anywhere except major cities and the best college towns. I swear, Americans got their cars en masse and decided they never again wanted to be able to spend a Friday night without getting in one. A kickass town will always have a really dense city center.

Edit- I have a lot of good friends in Starkville, and even as an Ole Miss fan, I'd be ecstatic if Starkville became a more livable place.

I just really want a sports bar. If it's locally owned, that's great. If it's not, I still want one.

One thing I should make clear, I'm not agreeing with the people who answered the question "What would make Starkville a better college town?" with "Buffalo Wild Wings." To that question, I agree with whoever said go to downtown Athens and there is your answer. However, as someone who lives here, I want a sports bar.

I have eaten in expensive resaurants in big cities, and always leave thinking you know, for all the pomp and circumstance, I would really rather just have had a good Mugshots burger. Or maybe some Amerigo, since you brought up jackson restaurants.

We can't forget Stamps Superburgers... or Kieffers. I'd love to have a Kieffers in Oxford or Memphis...

Ah. You hadn't made that exactly clear.

when you spend upwards of $200 on a meal, one tends to say it was the best meal of their life because otherwise you feel kind of stupid.

Yeah. I know. You asked why we'd want a BWW. I was answering that question, but as to the original question, no I don't think a BWW would help make us a better college town. I think an area of lots of bars and restaurants together that you could walk to from campus would, like others have said.

We should also get rid of idiotic alcohol laws. I'm cautiously optomistic that we're not too far away on this.

the only problem with that is road blocks. going to a bar then having to drive through a road block doesn't really improve starkvillle in my opinion. they need something in the cotton district. the grill is ok, but more of a bar atmosphere would be nice too.

then you will love Aladdin's Mediterranean on Lakeland in Fondren.

I think that pound for pound Char has the best service and very well-executed dishes. It sounds a little out of place, but I think their hamburger may be the absolute best in town. (Be sure and ask for onion rings instead of fries.) Bravo does a good job on some dishes. And a small known Bon Ami at Maywood Mart is a very nice food surprise. (Can you tell that I work in the area.)

Perhaps the best restaurant in the state is pretty close to S'ville. Phillip M's at the Silver Star. It has declined a little in the past coupla years, but is still damn fine. The oysters collete, the filet and the wine list are absolute joy. I hear that they are about to shut it down for a short period to refurbish...and to tweak the upscale menu.

I'm hungry. I gotta go.

last year was as fun as I've ever had tailgating for football.

I do agree with you and other posters about the concentration of bars. I think it boils down to that, basically. Sports bars are pretty cool anywhere though, and would be a nice addition.

Obviously, you have never visited Tucson or Tempe.
The strip clubs there have some serious . . . I mean SERIOUS . . . talent. Many dancers are college students trying to make a buck.
Of course, no such thing would work in Mississippi . . . until the majority of the population loosens up and gets the stick out of their butt.

and the fact that a legitimate (or two or three) 4 to 5 star restaurant can't sustain itself in Vegas is a travesty. I imagine Sunday sales may help with this. If I knew how to run a SERIOUSLY good restaurant, and there were Sunday sales in Starkville, I'd certainly look into it. NO competition. And all of the people about to say "Veranda" which is really the only reasonable defense...yeah... it's good... like maybe 3 star good. And that IS the best. Every time a new restaurant opens that people kind of think is going to be the great new place, it turns into a ******** that has terrible service, rank barfood and has to sustain itself by cowtowing to idiot drunken 21 year olds. And while we're at it, can we get two more bars where regional/national acts come play - see 40 Watt.

...and was the best place in town, just tucked away in the Cotton District out of the way, and hard to find with little parking. It was a boutique restaurant with European style and white linen tablecloths. They had a limited menu each night that changed frequently with 4 courses with a set price. Your only additional cost was your drinks. They only had about 8-10 tables, so the surge crowds on the high volume weekends couldn't be accommodated.

And I wonder why it did. I always heard that the place was owned by about 7 alumn that always wanted to have a good meal. And if they could keep the losses to within reason, always get a table when they wanted one, and have great food, they would stay open. Perhaps they couldn't keep the losses to within reason.
