He had such a great run in the 80's. From Body Heat to Kiss of a Spider Woman he was terrific. I think he was the only character I liked in The Big Chill. LOL.

I liked the movie and his role in it. It's not very plausible, but interesting nonetheless...I liked him in The Village. I don't think a lot of people liked that film, but I did. He was pretty good as the patriarch.
Oh I don't think it's plausible at all. That said, I get it - Shymalan created a literal interpretation of something many people deal with - fear of what is the unknown, and outside their comfort.
