Played golf in a charity event last week. Teams consisted of three shmucks such as myself and one celebrity type. Celebrities were mostly former football players and coaches with a few country music people mixed in. Guy on our team was a former SEC player, NFL player, and CBS college sports analyst. Over a few holes he talked about college sports post NCAA. He said that the post NCAA college sports landscape is already decided and negotiated. The change will come in 2026, he didn’t specify if it was for the 2026 season or after the 2026 season. 63 teams will break off from the NCAA in football and men’s basketball and form a new league/ association and participate in revenue sharing of the upcoming TV rights for this new group. He mentioned 3 billion dollars and each player receiving $50,000 per season. No change to the transfer portal. School NIL collectives would cease to exist and individual players and or their agents would be free to negotiate NIL deals. Baseball and the other sports would not be part of revenue sharing and would be up to each university as how and how much to support. The non revenue sharing sports would still be governed by the NCAA. The NCAA would keep the Men’s basketball tournament broadcast rights but have no control over the regular season. He said that everything is already negotiated and decided and theres just a few legal hurdles to overcome with different conferences media rights. I wasn’t in the cart with the guy so I just got the parts of the conversation when the four of us were together and the conversation eventually shifted to other things. No idea if any of what he said was true but interesting nonetheless so I thought that I would share. I wish that I’d asked more questions.
