No congratulations from John Cook?

Wanna try again, BW??

John Cook, Nebraska head coach

"Today is a sad day for the sport of volleyball, but also a great day to honor Coach Rose. What he has accomplished will never be matched in our sport, like winning four-straight National Championships. For me personally, he helped make me a better coach. Every time you played a Russ Rose-coached team, you were taught lessons on how to get better.

"Some of the greatest matches in our sport’s history were between Penn State and Nebraska, with the 2008 match being the greatest of them all. Russ was such a compelling figure in our sport that he drew fans to watch and grew the sport in the process. Russ will definitely be missed by me, our fans and our players, who call Russ my BFF. I look forward to some time with Russ, smoking cigars and talking about grandbabies. He is the GOAT!

"Most importantly, I want to put in the first bid at $500 on that damn notebook he writes in!"

I think Russ effectively retired 3-4 years ago and has understandably been going through the motions.

Who could blame him

Coach Rose is one of the most approachable guys I have ever met. One morning my family and I were getting something to eat at a Panera Bread (owned by family friends) located off of Gulf Gate Drive in Sarasota when I saw an older gentleman sitting at a table outside enjoying his breakfast. The man had Penn State gear on so I approached him and said “hey it’s another Penn Stater!” The guy seemed a little bit alarmed at first as this was only a couple of years after 2011 and he probably thought I was going to harass him, but I unzipped my lightweight jacket revealing my Penn State shirt underneath and a big smile came across his face. He reached out his hand to shake mine and stated “Russ, Russ Rose.” I was flabbergasted! I told him what a great pleasure it was meeting one of the true coaching icons of Penn State. I sat down and chatted a bit, but had to go when my family came out of the restaurant with our to go order since we had to be on our way. Just a wonderful guy.

Awhile later I was speaking with a couple Penn State friends (former athletes)from the area and they said that they play golf with Coach Rose. He apparently has or had a home in a development that is just around the corner from mine. I was hoping to bump into him again sometime, but never have yet. Maybe now that he is retired I may get to meet him again. The next time I will actually recognize him.

Got a big chuckle reading this. I don't think that bid would stand very long. I always found it curious as well. That and how he never smiled. Over the years I looked for one and this is the closest pic I found...5 Sept 2015 vs Stanford, a 3-0 PSU win.
Thanks Coach Rose for all you've done for the Ladies you coached, the University, and the sport.

Dammit! John Cook has made me like him, at least for a little while.

A very small remembrance, but one that meant a lot to me and my daughter. I (a PSU alum) was a scientist working at the U of Wisconsin in 1993, just at the beginning of PSU's B1G relationship. Longing for any connection to my alma mater, I brought my daughter (she and I both decked out in PSU gear) to a match in Madison between Russ Rose's squad and the Badgers. Before the game, Russ Rose came over and greeted us, a moment I'll never forget. Of course his program went on to do what it did, but I think a small part of what he built happened that day. He made two diehard fans then (although my 6-year old also kinda liked Bucky Badger those days as well).

Nice story, well told. Thanks for this.
