In answer to my question in another thread, Spencer Rattler has an online store selling gear with his logo on it.

The SC ones look pretty decent, but not gonna pay $29.99 for a t-shirt. Maybe if he blows up here this year I'll get one.

I wonder why I have only ever worn team apparel and nothing that highlights an individual player.

Back in the 90s I got a jacket from somewhere there in Cola and had the store put an "18" on the back for Taneyhill.

And I know a lot of folks wear a player's jersey. I'm not saying they shouldn't. I've just always stayed with team apparel. I think I have a built-in gene that resists identity with any person. It applies to politicians and celebrities also.

Can gear be sold with the team logo AND a player on it? That's what I don't know. Rattler's gear just has the picture of the state on it. Nothing Gamecock.
That way, he can keep all the money. That's my assumption.

For sure.

I'm curious if it's open now for anyone to sell team gear that has both the team logo and a player's name/likeness or if that's restricted somehow.

I do not know. I would think that use of a licensed logo would entail a kickback to the school. It certainly would if anyone else used such.

I think the logo itself is fairly cool, if not a bit pretentious for someone in his situation.

Need to come out with a Spencer Rattler headband with the hair attached. Just like the Guy Fieri hair attached to visor!! 😂 BC07218F-17EA-402F-B34A-785FE1DAB17C.jpeg

Has anyone thought about maybe waiting until he throws his first TD pass as a Gamecock before buying merch with his name/number/logo on it?

I’m more into team gear then an individual athletes gear when it comes to this type of thing. especially at the college level.

Disclaimer: I do like Project Rock stuff from Under Armor, but I was a huge WWE and Rock fan as a kid- so he is the exception.

Rattler hasn’t even played a down of Carolina football yet. If he ends up a baller like Conner Shaw or Clowney then people will buy that stuff for sure. I think it would be more attractive to the Gamecock audience if the shirts were at least Garnet and the Rattler logo could be in black.

To answer your question broadly, whether or not a student athlete can use a school's brand, logo, etc is determined by state law and/or the school itself. Texas state laws prevent such usage, while SC state laws do not. Specifically:
  1. Student-athletes may use University of South Carolina intellectual property with the prior written approval of the University of South Carolina Athletics Department. Student-athletes may autograph and sell officially licensed memorabilia that includes University marks that is purchased by the student-athletes.
  2. South Carolina State Law prohibits the use of University of South Carolina facilities for NIL activities.

So if the school says it's OK it's OK. If the athlete first purchases the attire, autographs it, and resells it, it's OK.

A helpful answer, thanks!

I wish him luck at his various endeavors. But like the laws of conservation of energy or mass, an individual has a finite amount of time and can't create more out of the blue. Time you spend in one endeavor is, by definition, time taken away from another. I have no idea how the young man spends his time, but I will say that his T-shirts look a lot better than his game does right now.

In 1969/70, while in 2nd and 3rd grade, I'd draw a #11 on my white T-shirts and be a badass on the court during recess.
