And now to the data

Spotlight PA’s analysis found that between 2019 and 2024, the full Penn State board met for nearly 49 hours and spent around 3 hours and 43 minutes, or 7.6%, of that time deliberating university business before a vote. The discussion in most meetings totals only a few minutes, if there is any at all.

What did they spend time on you might ask?

Penn State trustees’ public deliberations have been heavily weighted toward two topics: changes to the board’s bylaws — including how trustees attain or retain a seat — and athletics-related proposals, including the stadium renovation, alcohol sales at athletics events, and renovations to a football building. These two subjects accounted for nearly 143 minutes, or 64%, of the board’s public deliberations since January 2019, Spotlight PA’s analysis showed.

Trustees often talk about the necessity of being open and transparent. It all sounds great when they're spinning how seriously they take their responsibilities. In practice, they're wannabe tyrants who hate being questioned about the decisions they make.

Sounds like an HOA board, school board members, or county commissioners.

I keep telling my wife that the next home we buy will be in a community with no HOA.

Nothing has changed since 1982 when the BOT was told to abide by PA's open meetings laws or receive nothing from the state. Since, then, it's been lip service.

I can remember the good old days when there was a public comments portion of the agenda. After 2011, more people wanted to comment and many of them were critical of the board. IIRC, during one of those sessions was when Ken Frazier made his infamous "people who look like you" remark. Soon the collective thin skinned board moved public comments to a time when the board wasn't in the room. Maybe they were somewhere curled up in a corner sucking their thumbs. A board above criticism and unable to self-evaluate. What a shame.

I'm not even sure if any sort of public comments are allowed nowadays. I doubt it since the board does all it can to protect itself.
