Too bad MSU can’t string together enough good decisions to keep the football program from being embarrassing.

I am assuming we are not wanting to mess with the accounting and/or are worried about title IX, but it just seems insane that we’d turn down money at this point. I don’t have money to spare for any sport other than football, men’s basketball, or baseball. Get the bigwigs donating big dollars to give uncommitted dollars if you need to. Don’t just turn away money though.

Exactly. If your job is to raise money, you don’t turn donations down.
They should just say they can designate where your money goes and just put it into the pot.

Yes, it’s the job of development and alumni relations units to raise money.
However, it is leadership’s job to determine what money to accept. Not all donations are have equal strings, and there could be a long-term encumbrance to said donations — a “cost of ownership” if you will
(Of course, some universities can’t say “no” to anyone. This is why higher education has become more ivory tower than ever)
Obviously there are some donations you just don’t take. But a sport specific NIL donation with no other strings is one you should take every time.
This should keep us positioned comfortably. Top 35 nationally in terms of total NIL resources. Number 15/16 SEC.
Taking a sport specific nil donation is hardly cumbersome. It’s not like people are asking to designate their money for a left handed defensive end.
