But Sylvester Croom developed Lance Long into an NFL contributor so at least we have a track record of that

Yep….haven’t signed a WR that got drafted in almost 30 years. It’s pathetic….and it has spanned 5 different head coaching tenures at MSU (which means its bigger than any one coach or system).

You wanna know who has had two WR’s drafted since we last had one picked? Vanderbilt….as well as every other SEC team and even a bunch of damn G5 and FCS teams. In today’s game where all the rules favor the offense and, more specifically, passing offenses, its something that has to change.

Since Moulds, we’ve had more longsnappers drafted than WRs.

Fred Ross is the one that surprised me as I always thought he had a lot of NFL qualities

I wonder how many other programs have a longer drought than us, or are we the title holders?

According to some quick googling, Iowa State had an even longer drought (1985 - 2019) that was broken recently when Hakeem Butler was drafted by Arizona.

Other notables from some lower end Power 5 programs, 1997 until now:

Kansas - 3 WR drafted
Northwestern - 2 WR drafted
Rutgers - 3 WR drafted
Washington State - 8 WR drafted (5 were pre-Leach)
Wake Forest - 3 WR drafted

And how many did he have at TT, besides Crabtree?

It is a sad tale. Jackie was always run first, just didn't prioritize WR, but he got a few good ones. Croom was just an idiot. He had several guys that should have been great, but instead of using them well, he tried to force them into his vision. Mullen really didn't care about throwing the ball, it was run, run, run. His offenses were even more run than Jackie's.

Hard for receivers to do enough unless they make crazy plays like Moulds did.

It also takes recruiting the right types for OT to make passing go.

Bear did terrible in drills at the combine iirc, and ruined his chances. Whoever was in charge of his training did a horrible job getting him ready.

We were told once upon a time that Ray Ray Bivines and Antonio Hargro were NFL receivers. Jean even said you couldn’t catch Ray Ray in a phone booth!!!

Actually, it was Jackie Wayne Sherrill who gets credit for the “couldn’t catch Ray Ray in a phone booth”-and he should get credit as he is the one who made that statement. He said it more than once in the days following his signing with us.

And that is when I quit following recruiting!

How about when Jackie signed Eric Molds AND Keyshawn Johnson in the same class. KJ didn’t make his grades so he went to juco and then signed with SC… and the rest is history…
