Tattoos

One thing about tattoos I've noticed in recent years. I've had a few operations and had to see a lot of doctors. Nurses, seemingly every one I have to deal with in all these visits - have tattoos. I really didn't notice/pay attention to it until I had kidney surgery in July 2024. Every nurse during the entire process at the hospital had tattoos, including the operating room nurses.

The last doctor's visit I had in May (one of the Unity Point Urgent Cares in Cedar Rapids), I finally asked one of the two nurses I saw that day (both had tats) why this is.

She didn't have an answer, but she did confirm that every nurse at that location has tattoos.

Absolutely disgusting. If a nurse was attending me and had tattoos I'd ask for a different nurse and also for her to be fired. Dirty!

I wouldn't step foot on one of those courses. The PGA has no rules against tattoos. Most chefs and farriers have them to cover up for burns.

It may just be the fact that I'm a boomer, but I really like big tats. Just not the kind of tats that you are talking about.

I was thinking about this some more. When I was a kid it really was like bikers and people somewhat on the outside of society that had tattoos. You would have the military man here and there. Tattoo parlors were illegal in SC for along time.

I noticed the same, too...half the nurses I saw recently had sleeve tattoos.

I'm surprised tattoos are so common considering they're permanent.

I’ll bite. Heavily tattooed myself. I’m 43. When I was young it was rare to see anything more than typical upper arm tats and tats where you could easily cover up. Now, everyone has tattoos, especially in Florida. It’s crazy how quickly it became normalized. I just like the aesthetics and wanted to be different. Now I’m just like every other douche bag out there lol.

I’m 47 so I’m a young GenX. I started my professional career 9 days after I turned 21. My bosses were elder Boomers and a small handful of young Greatest Generation.

I’ve been in the corporate America game for a LONG time and where “tattoos” are certainly more “accepted” now, visible tattoos are in no way shape form or fashion common place or normal, especially among leadership. Now, I know several of my peers at the Director and VP level who have half sleeves or tattoos but they are never visible. One of my VPs at Raytheon had a full sleeve but he always always ALWAYS wore a long sleeve shirt.

I also get a chuckle out of the belief that “IT guys are too nerdy for tattoos”. The days of “nerds” being the predominant people in IT hasn’t been true for 20 years …. and …. Even if it were true …. nerds and geeks rule the world. The coolest most athletic awesome person you know …. answers to a geek/nerd somewhere along the chain.

Yikes ... this is a weird thread. How'd I miss it?

I have one tattoo. Got it when I was in college ... in the early/mid-90s. Back then, this might have been an appropriate thread, as tattoos were becoming much more commonplace amongst youngsters, and were busting out of the bikers/military-only demographic. So, I could see some old-timers posting something like this in response. But today? Tattoos are all over, in all walks of life. By the naughts, older folks ... "regular" folks were getting them all the time.

Personally, I don't like them much. I just don't think they look good. But I also don't care if others have them, unless we're talking neck/face ... that's still weird to me. I especially don't like hand tattoos. Occasionally, I'll see one that looks good/makes sense to me ... but, again ... it's not up to me.

But, back when I got my sole tattoo, I was thinking of getting a large tattoo, but wanted to test the waters to see if it hurt, and if I would like it something like that on me ... so I got an "intro" tattoo. Pain was manageable, but I quickly grew bored with it and regretted it. Glad I took that initial step.

Did you ever think you might regret them when you're 50+ years old?

That's my main curiosity about tattoos...they're basically permanent.
