The downside of 1st round games on campus...

That's not what I'm suggesting at all.

I'm suggesting you use 4 additional bowls as the first round games rather than playing the games on campus.

The traditional bowl games are already baked into the playoff system for all but the on-campus first round. Just use bowls for the first round too so that everyone gets a decent location to visit.

It’s asking a lot of fans to travel to multiple locations to follow a team that keeps advancing. The reason they went with this format was to encourage first round attendance rather than have people not attend the first round game to “hold out” on traveling to later more important playoff games

Am going to State College for the game. Will travel down Friday and home on Sunday. If we lose I got to experience the Beav for the umpteenth time.

If the first round game were at the Alamo Bowl in San Antonio for example, we'd probably make a 9 or 10 day family trip with two weekends in San Antonio. If we lose and the season is over at least we had fun family time + football.

I know if we win and move on the quarterfinals will be at bowl sites. But then you're up against short term planning and a lot more $$$ for flights and hotels etc.

For those of us without an unlimited budget, it'd be great to combine a love for Penn State football and a love for family time in nice weather areas into a single trip.

Teams play hard for home field advantage and always will, this is great for college
football. Bowl game as most of us knew them are a thing of the past.

Just for discussion the 77 Penn State team had one loss and played a then WAC
Arizona St. team in the Fiesta Bowl, but wanted the Orange vs. Oklahoma.
Again no thanks.
The early season discussion was how southern teams would
play in Beaver Stadium in December, the time is soon, Maryland first.

Disagree…if the committee does it “right”, they’d give us the matchups that are dictated by the seeds. This isn’t a bowl trying to fill seats, this is a playoff for a championship. If a team earned the 10th seed, should they really be bumped to 11th and theoretically play a more difficult game just to make it “unique”?

Here is another way to look at it....playoff teams going to the BIG 6 bowl games in the quarter finals, semi finals, etc.....does anyone really think they are going to be spending a day at Universal, having steak eating compeitions at a fancy steakhouse with the other team? These trips are going to be all business. If you are a top 12 team and make the playoff there are no more vacations and swag trips, you are going to be game mode and prep until your eliminated!!!! If you don't make the top 12 and are in one of the second tier bowl games, you are going to half half the roster opt out and it will be a developmental game for young guys returning for the following season. Bowl games are gone as we knew them but the playoff is going to be fun and exciting. I like having the home game in round 1, nice reward. It isn't like you are going to the citrus bowl for a 1st round game and going to Universal and the beach and having a vacation trip.

Speaking of not having unlimited budgets ... what about the fans and families who can't afford to fly out to San Antonio during the winter for a 10 day jaunt, but are willing and able to support their team on campus?

Just a hunch, like @Tgar has hunches, that the conferences and schools said: "For the opening games we don't want lesser/middling/piddling bowl games that suck all the revenue from the games off the backs of our programs and players. We want them on campus and the CFP/Conferences/Schools control-get all the revenue."
And the 4/5 major bowls probably also don't want an opening round showcase at lesser bowls, thus raising their status.
And on-campus hosting removes any potential scheduling conflicts with potential NFL stadium sites of those lesser bowls.

I still like the idea of 16 teams with the P4 CCG being the 1st round. The other 8 teams play at 2 neutral sites with the highest ranked teams choosing which site they want to play at. After this round the teams get re-seeded. Teams that lose CCG retain bowl eligibility.

Using the current rankings, though it would mean either Ohio State or Oregon is gone in the first round same with either Texas or Georgia or whoever supposed to be in the SEC game. In theory it would be better to be the third place team in the conference, so you could play a lesser team in the first round.

Yes I'm sure you are correct and I am the only college football fan in America who likes to combine a bowl game with a family trip to a nice location. Silly me for thinking others might have similar interests.

The other thing to note is it's easy to be fired up about a home game at the Beav. I am going and I'm sure it'll be amazing.

But we were a failed 4th down conversion against USC (or Minnesota), or a sleepwalk against Maryland this weekend away from traveling to ND or possibly Boise for our game as a #11 seed (assuming we don't get bumped completely for a 3 loss Bama).

Btw, the next 4 most prestigious bowls that could be used for 1st round games IMHO are:

Citrus
Gator
Sun
Alamo

I wouldn't consider any of them middling/piddling. They all are stable, long-running games, and I think we've played in all but the Sun?

Meh. I like the games on campus. Fairly easy to drive to. No hotel. No airfare. No rental car.
Besides all those bowls you mentioned have never been part of the bowl participation for the MNC/Coalition/BCS. Why would the conferences add “partners” and divvy up the pie any more than they already have?
Plus 2nd tier bowls have never interested me except for the Citrus Bowl the year we played UTjr.
