The Lumumba era is coming to a close

It will take decades to fix Jackson just like it took decades to destroy it and that is assuming that Jackson wants to be fixed which is not a given. Lumumba only expedited the rate of deterioration. Hohrn should at least know how to get things down politically in the state capital and I think both parties understand that the state needs Jackson to improve.

Hohrn up 43 points with over half the votes counted.

This is the first step in fixing Jackson.
There is opportunity for some good here. Horhn isn't ideal, but it's going to be hard to be worse.

And you finally have the state stepping in to help after years of neglect compared to what other states do for their major cities.

If you come to Jackson and stay downtown through Fondren to Highland Village, you can be safe, eat well, and have a really good time.

There have been only two murders in Jackson this year in areas where most any of you will ever go. One was a few hours after the parade downtown, and the other was at an apartment complex in Belhaven Heights. There is no doubt the visibility Capitol Police has made a huge difference. Homicides are on pace to be the lowest number since 2018, and could be half the number of the record set in 2021.

That could be a first step. Replacing bad politicians is always a good thing, unless you replace them with more bad politicians. Time will tell.

I attribute every bit of the progress to the Capitol Police who Antar fights tooth and nail, increased state and federal support, and certain groups of individuals who care deeply about the city. The spike in crime happened 100% under his leadership.

Now if Jackson Police cars could be at many city intersections to ticket drivers who think rules are just guidelines…

The one time I’ve seen a driver get pulled over for a traffic violation in Jackson the past few years has been by Capitol Police.

Horhn is no rocket surgeon, but he is at least a decent guy who wants to do what's best for Jackson. He is - at the least - going to take steps to try to fix the glaring infrastructure, administration, and policing problems.

He won't be able to fix everything - there's too much and it will take years - but just putting in effort to make the city better incrementally, and actually listening to good ideas (instead of rejecting them all out of hand because of who they came from), will be so much better than what we've had in so many ways that it's hard to describe.

He's been in the statehouse for years as well, and has friends on both sides of the aisle, so I'm hopeful that he will be able to build bridges and actually get some things done. Thank God the Jackson voters actually mobilized and common sense won out on this one.

Hahaha...so much positivity. Horhn will probly be better than Lumumba but he ain't fixing Jackson.
I said he couldn't fix everything, but it will be better than we've had.

The crew we've had not only didn't try to fix ANYthing, they seemed in many cases to be actively working against the public's best interest.

If that is considered too much 'positivity'... so be it.

Is he a decent guy? I assumed he was just another grifter based on Bennie Thompson's endorsement. Literally know nothing else about him, but assumed whoever was not under indictment and was not endorsed by Bennie would have been the most decent candidate.

Really, he just has to let the legislature bring downtown and the I-55 corridor up to first world standards and it will go a long way towards helping Jackson. Get decent roads, functioning water and sewer, and keep violent crime out of the essential areas and Jackson will start to improve pretty quickly. Still plenty of people that don't want to drive 40 minutes to work in Jackson. And I may be naive, but I don't know that any of that will be politically difficult? People will ***** about having to pay for water and sewer service and may ***** if crime inside the CID isn't treated as catch and release, but it seems like he could be controlled resistance on those issues and come out ahead overall.

What would really help Jackson recover more quickly would be some sort of vouchers for school, as a lot of families that would be willing to live in Jackson are priced out by private school tuition, but that I do think would politically hard to manage.

He's been in the statehouse for years as well, and has friends on both sides of the aisle, so I'm hopeful that he will be able to build bridges and actually get some things done. Thank God the Jackson voters actually mobilized and common sense won out on this one.

Anxiously waiting for @catvet to weigh in
I actually do hope that Horhn can make some positive changes, but I don't expect much. There are too many problems, not enough tax base and very little community support. In stating that Jackson is very dangerous, lacks at least 200 officers, is impoverished as most who could move did, has extreme infrastructure issues and has a culture of those who lead wanting moreso to enrich themselves than solve problems, the degradation is entrenched. Yes, the Lumumba team has taken Jackson to the edge. Under the son's leadership, nothing positive occurred and he used his time to give out crony contracts for the purpose of kickbacks. I doubt much changes. Jackson, the hellhole it is, is officially dead.

But other than that, it seems OK

When you have a mayor willing to watch the city burn around him without him getting in on the action, and denying both state and federal help, you can imagine that he had to be ushered out in shame. And he was.

The State and Feds can start to make differences now in Jackson. City alone does not have a pot to pee in outside of NE Jackson.
