just wondering if anybody on here watched the Penguin miniseries on Max that just concluded. last episode was last night and was probably one of the top 2 or 3 finales i have seen. Colin Farrell as Penguin was bad -$$. if anyone has any idle time to just watch the first episode you will be hooked.

It was so good. I thought it interesting that they played a cover of a song that Nirvana played on Unplugged since Something in the Way was the soundtrack of The Batman.

Finished it today.
Really good show. Digging the non cartoon super hero stuff that’s out.
Don’t get me wrong I loved Iron Man and captain America when they first came out but I’m over the cartoon level Marvel this was good ****

I have been considering this series. I am absolutely not up to date on anywhere close to 100% of DC Comic shows and movies. I’ve some Batman movies over here years to know who the Penguin is. But is there any specific movie or series I should be sure to watch before starting this?

I would watch The Batman before if you can and it is available on Max. The Penguin stands alone but the movie sets the Gotham scene and the events that preceed the movie. There are a couple of key events that are important in the movie.

You should really start with the original.

The Batman, thats really all you need to watch. You can watch the Penguin without it but some of the backstory isn’t going to make as much sense. Plus The Batman is fantastic.

All you need to watch is “The Batman” movie from a couple of years ago.

No but it certainly helps, see above. If you are watching The Penguin, you are investing 8 hours and have Max, so why not just watch 2 more hours of a really good movie. What’s great about The Batman is it brings the character back to what he is at the core. A detective. Yes he is still a crime fighter but it’s not a superhero movie like Marvel or the other trilogy (which I love as well).

Gotcha thanks for the setup. Was going to start it last night but I’ll wait and watch The Batman. I saw it in theatres when It came out but I legit do not remember a thing except I thought it was a bit boring. Just wasn’t a fan of Pattinson in the role but going to rewatch it. Maybe opinion will change. Is there going to be a sequel to that movie?

Yes. The plan is for The Penguin to give some backstory leading into the second one but besides Internet rumors, I don’t think a villain or plot has been established for 2. If you didn’t really care for the first one but have a general idea what happened, just go straight into The Penguin. There are not plot points that were established in the movie that will cause you to miss anything in the series.

It’s unreal what they can do with makeup. My wife didn’t believe me when I told her that Collin Ferrell was the Penguin.

My wife looked it up and told me, then got mad when I didn't believe her and looked it up myself. He, and the makeup crew, deserve a bunch of awards.

Show is great. It's a really good organized crime series more than anything.

Note to anybody planning to watch/rewatch The Batman in preparation for The Penguin:
Watch it at night with the lights all the way down and turn the sound up. That movie is meant to be watched in total darkness.

the latest movie was called the Batman from (2022) and it had the Penguin in it for a few minutes but you really don't just have to watch it.

Ended up really enjoying it. As others noted, it's like an over the top Sopranos mini-series.

My only beef is, how in the world does this pick up 2-3 days after The Batman movie, yet Penguin and nobody else ever mentions freaking Batman?

I mean, 48 hours before it starts, Penguin lived through an outrageous car chase with explosions and death where he's chased down the freeway by the Batmobile.

That's after Batman beat up every bodyguard he had in his nightclub.

I get they didn't want to have to cast somebody to play discount Batman for TV, but damn--they figured that out with Carmine Falcone. NOT mentioning Batman in context seems like a crazy disconnection from the story.

Agree with everybody else that Collin Farrell is incredible and unrecognizable. My wife didn't believe me, either.

I know we’re not supposed to bump old threads, but I just finished this last night, and holy hell

This show is a legit 10/10 masterpiece. Best new show that I’ve seen in years, and there’s not a wasted line of dialogue throughout the entire thing. The finale completely got me too, and I won’t spoil it, but that was an amazing job by the writers to make sure that you didn’t walk away with a soft spot in your heart for the penguin

I just finished it a few nights ago. I think the ending had to happen but I didn’t really expect it. I started feeling it right when the scene started, though, for whatever reason
