If your SOS is outside the top-100, even if you're undefeated, you shouldn't be in the CFP top-12. No matter what conference you're in.

b-b-b-b-but Boise State beat Oklahoma in a bowl game a million years ago.
In another thread a poster put something about there being 128 FBS teams. If this is true, then the top half should DEFINITELY, at minimum, be where your strength of schedule should be. Only top 64 & above are eligible for playoffs based on their end of year SOS.
Its all political. If it wasn't then the whole playoff would be made up of SEC and B1G teams
A predetermined unwavering set criteria written in stone on how to qualify for the playoffs prior to the start of the season would be nice. And a top 64 SOS sounds like a good requirement to start with.

Nearly split down the middle between G5 and P4. That's exactly why I believe having a SOS somewhere in the top half is not too much to ask.
I understand the desire for that, but also having a playoff system that virtually eliminates half or more than half of college football before the season starts isn't great either. Some years what would have been a good schedule isn't. Look at Texas - they went to Michigan, which normally you'd expect to be a strong opponent. It's not the Horns' fault Michigan isn't good this year.
Perhaps some sort of scheduling agreement could be reached where P4 teams are required to play a G5 school each year instead of an FCS opponent.
For example, Boise State gave Oregon everything they could handle at the beginning of the season. That's a data point that benefits Boise State, makes them seem more legitimate than if they were just playing the Mountain West schedule.
If Old Dominion had been a better team, their performance against Carolina in week one would have been beneficial to their resume.
Probably gearing up for the big Wofford game. Or maybe just a functional alcoholic
