1. Let's start with the most glarious and obvioius issue - early in the 2nd quarter, the FS1 announcers commented on Manny Diaz's hair. That's my schtick, you effin' jabronies. I always suspected that the media/podcasters stole from the message boards and this once again proves it. Goes to show why these guys and their interns are on FS1 and not the parent network - they can't come up with their own material.

2. Always good to send the seniors out with a win. I know some of these guys are definietly moving on, and some have decisions to make, but all of them are part of the PSU family and they always will be. The TV showed a photo of tears steaming down CJFs face, and shows the emotion that is part of this game. So, I guess there is crying in college football. (and it's not just relegated to that idiot Ohio State fan who dresses up as a cowboy).

3. A number of post game podcasts commented on the 4th down play on Michigan State's 12 yard line as an important play (Singleton's TD catch). However, earler in the game, on the 90 yard drive PSU put together, Clifford flushed to his right and threw back to KLS for a first down on a 4th down play that kept that drive alive, leading to the first PSU TD. This set the early tone and forced MSU to play catch up for the rest of the game (which, for a good portion of it, they did a pretty good job of). Because PSU got the early TD, that allowed the trick play of KLS to TJ for the 2nd TD. Which allowed PSU to keep MSU at bay.

4. Speaking of KLS - maybe his best game in Blue and White (?). Someone from the WR room needed to step forward, and it was him. Conversly, in his last home game in an abbreviated PSU career, Tinsley was quiet.

5. The mix up on Abdul Carter's interception attempt was a 14 point swing. Had PSU not gotten up quickly with 14 points early on, that could have been more of an issue as the game wore on.

6. PSU lost the middle 8. Actually, they lost the middle 20 minutes of game time because the MSU QB outplayed the coaching effort of the PSU DC. That kid was helped with some great catches, but his play kept the defense on it's heels, starting at the end of the first half. Diaz did not seem to be able to come up with an answer. MSU came out aggressive, and then PSU defense got aggressive after the first couple of series. That was the momentum until Pinegar missed the second FG, and then the MSU offense picked up after that.

7. Jake Pinegar- ugh. Not the way you wanted to potentially end your PSU home career. But, you made 5 XPs and kicked off well.

8. It was a weird game. If it was a boxing match, PSU would have won the first few rounds, MSU the middle and PSU the last 2 including a knock out to end the match.

9. Was not sure why CJF went for it with a deep pass with foru minutes left - but then again that beat the spread, and I figured he either took PSU and the points or he wanted as many points as possible to impress the committe who will rank everyone. I will assume someone is in his ear about how other teams were doing - I did see during the broadcast that someone would get in his ear about something, and it always seemed to occur when something happned in one of the other games (like Clemson losing).

10. This was the way Sean deserved to go out. Hit his last 13 passess in a row, threw four TDs, and no ints. He has 84 TDs and with four more, can pass the often hated Chad Henne for 3rd in Big Ten history.

11. I did not know Tank was out until later in the game. This was a big bullet the PSU team dodged. One of our own, who is a huge Tank Smith fan, is probably baking him a get well cake right now. We will need Tank for the bowl game. Additionally, I saw Keyvone Lee on the sidelines in his uni and no pads - and was laughing it up with the running backs. His future can be addressed at a later time, but it was good to see him on the sideline at least with his teammates.

12. PSU defeated MSU with depth and more young talent. MSU has certainly had some issues this year, plus the usual attrrition that comes with a long football season, but the underlying issue is that Mel Tucker sold his soul to the portal last year and got a bunch of guys, and ended up parlaying that into a NY6 bowl and a big contract. But, yesterday is also the result of what happens when you have to rely on college football free agency. He did not have enough talent and depth to come at PSU in waves. I would venture to guess that is also part of the reason he lost to IU last week. Live by the portal, die by the portal. It's still better to develop the talent.

13. 10-2 and in the hunt for an NY6 Bowl Game. This was not where we thought this is where we would be 12, or even 6 months ago. Kudos to the staff, the squad and the BWI Legion of Coaching Excellence for all their effort this year. You all did a great job. Now go get us one more win

Good points. Re #3 While the play you mention was important, clearly Singleton’s TD on 4th and one was an important play since MSU had got within 5 and there was more than enough time for them to possibly score if it fails. Re #9 Perhaps because it iced the game and/or perhaps because Franklin still remembers Sparty running it up during the “sanctions” years by having an OL score a TD late in the game and then yucking it up on the sideline.

#3 -Singleton's play was important. However, I felt that the earlier play was overlooked by the podcasters/media , perhaps because it was not a touchdown. But, it kept that 90 yard drive alive leading for a first score and that was imporant as MSU did mount a come back a bit.

#9 Yeah, I thought about MSU running up the scoare also, but to be honest, that was a previous coach, and not this one. I don't think their has been any bad blood between these two guys - yet. I think CJF was being kept abreast of what is going on outside of the PSU game and he knows in the landscape of things, getting a 19 point win over an unranked MSU team is more impressive than a 12 point win.

Just my take on things.

Look forward to your thoughts now after the game. Good points and another thing to add on is we are watching the growth of the next great LB at PSU wearing double sticks. He does remind me of Micah early on, Tarburton and PJ both said the same thing after the game yesterday how Carter is really blossoming and is an athletic freak. Can't wait to see a good winter in the trainers room will do to him.

OK....I guess.

The only Gallagher I know of was the watermelon smashing comedian who passed away recently - did he have a relatiionship with MSU football?

Valid statement and it's worth a discussion.

However, when I do these post game thoughts, I try to limit it to game related issues and I try to keep it between 13-15 points, and Manny Diaz's hair is worth it's own singular point of emphasis.

I am planning a "thoughts from the couch" on 2022 season and program moving forward, but this was just this game.

Thanks for the response.

the WR recruit that is currently committed to WVU but was taking in the scene at Happy Valley last night. I think I got the kid's name right.

Fair enough. But, it still seemed like an odd time to go deep, just to impress a recruit. Four minutes left, ball on the MSU side of the field- run the ball a few times, and burn time.

oh you are right, I was just being a smart ***. But it was a way to put a dagger in them, they would have probably used all 3 of their TOs and stopped us, forcing to trot out Pinnegar again...

Regarding #8, I thought I was watching deja vu all over again. A mediocre QB absolutely shredding the Penn State defense, throwing can't-miss darts, and looking like a Heisman contender going up against a middle school team. I saw Luwerke (twice!) and Darnold and Barrett and a few others absolutely shred the Penn State defense, and I had a sinking "Here we go again" feeling,

Good run-through. I’ll just add for #1 that when we get a storyline, no matter its origin, if it’s interesting, it will be something to keep an eye on and possibly comment on. Thanks to you, every time they showed Diaz yesterday, I was checking out the follicles.

Regarding #2- I just want to say that anyone who is not pleased with the job CJF and the entire PSU staff accomplished with this year's team of so many underclassmen is not a true PSU fan. How about four NY6 Bowls in ten seasons? These graduating seniors represent the university with class and dignity and hats off to them! We are...

Regarding number 9 with someone in his ear:

I noticed analyst Ken Wisenhunt standing directly behind CJF and James would often talk to him throughout the game. Wis was a Superbowl winning OC with the Steelers then later took the Cardinals to the Superbowl as head coach. I think he's been a major contributor this year and hope that we can bring him back although I doubt it. I'd actually love the Steelers to bring him back next year.

One comment. Felt bad for Tinsley that Clifford barely targeted him. Really would have liked to see him go out with more catches and a TD.

Many on this board complain about Clifford not throwing the ball down the field......so he does .....and we speculate that Franklin is running up the score.........

Screw the Steelers....I'd like to see PSU give him a promotion.

Yeah, it’s crazy, guys complain about somebody not getting enough catches or rushes or whatever. They’ve got two running backs to get the ball to three tight ends and three receivers. It’s not like each one of them can have five catches or 20 carries.

Regarding a portion of number 11, does anyone know why Keyvone Lee was wearing sunglasses while laughing it up with the other PSU running backs on the sideline? The sun was already down by that time

Its part of the cool persona? Or maybe he had an undisclosed eye injury and he has temporary light sensitivity? Pure speculations on my part.

BTW a side note ...Ryan Day is just getting torched nationwide. Now being called a fraud ... Phew tough morning for OSU fans...are OSU fans spoiled or onto something with Ryan Day?
Spoiled. We are still behind them.

A 12 point lead can quickly become a 5 point lead in todays game so ice it when you can.

Was a little surprised JF didn’t sub for Clifford on the last possession so the fans can give him a final applause. Maybe he left that up to Sean..

Fair enough. But, it still seemed like an odd time to go deep, just to impress a recruit. Four minutes left, ball on the MSU side of the field- run the ball a few times, and burn time.
Many on this board complain about Clifford not throwing the ball down the field......so he does .....and we speculate that Franklin is running up the score.........
I didn’t have any problem with that call whatsoever. It was clear that MSU was playing the run so what’s wrong with throwing for a TD and definitively icing the game? Nothing IMO

We are...
I agree. Everyone knows that Michigan and OSU are the teams to beat to take the next step. I am sure no one knows that better than Franklin and the players. On the other hand, unlike other years when PSU let losses to these teams turn into more losses to teams they should beat, the team came out and took care of business in a big way. First was Minnesota and then the last 4 games. To me that counts for something, especially with the number of young players they played and developed this year. I especially liked the development of the OL after a LT who many predict to be a high 1st round draft pick and Tengwall got hurt.

It was an imposter and he wore the sunglasses to throw you off.

#7 missed chip shot FGs were what turned this into a game. the second miss was after a long drive. to miss a chip shot kick after a long drive is one of the big momentum changers. If he makes the second kick, we are up 17-0 at half. there is no long drive for the 51 yd FG with 1 second. Charlie Fisher was on Paydirt with Tom last night, and made that comment. He said that led to the 3rd QTR momentum change.

Manny’s weakness all year has been the secondary defense over the middle of the field, which is often left wide open. Ohio State absolutely abused us with chunk yardage passes to Harrison Jr. on slant routes over the middle, and they weren’t the only ones. You saw MSU using that same playbook as they mounted their mid-game comeback bid.
