Big front page article in today's AJC. A middle of the night call alerted Athens police chief to a fatal car crash involving 2 fb players and 2 staff recruiters. It wasn't an officer on the scene calling, it was an employee of UGA's football program who frequently intercedes when players run afoul of the law. The chief relayed the info and an instruction to police dispatch. "Bryant Gannt, who is on the coaching staff is on the way out there said the cherf. They can talk with Gantt and tell him what's going on. And Gantt does what exactly the dispatcher asked? Bryant Gantt takes care of all player relations stuff said the chief. He'll be out there so talk to him. The article goes on to point out this is a fine line involved here with this guy being on the scene of an investigation.. A number of other incidents involving Gantt's interceding for players and law enforcement are cited. The most questionable when a recruit was arrested for assaulting his girlfriend. Records at the Clarke County jail indicated Gantt posted a $1,000 bond for the recruit's release., a potential violation of NCAA rules. After an inquiry by the Macon Telegraph, the jail changed it's records to say a friend arranged for his release. UGA AD said Gantt's name had been listed "in error". Hah. When Smart became hc, he promoted Gantt and increased his salary fivefold and assigned him to act as a s the team's liasion with law enforcement. Gantt has sure been busy as numerous accounts of his activities with police and players are cited. Another interesting note, before Gantt arrived at the crash site, officers at the scene asked the dispatcher to send them background info on 2 other players and logs suggest the 2 other players may have been on the scene after the crash. Interesting investigative news by the AJC.
