I think he has lost a couple of immideate family members very recently, one being his brother. I thought I remembered his father passed away during the season last year. Regardless, you don't ever know what somebody's situation is. If I lost my dad and brother close together, especially at that age, I may just go a little ape **** in the short term myself.
From an article by Paul Jones on 247:

Two years ago the outside linebacker lost his father and grandmother unexpectingly over a short span of time. Also in his senior year, Hughes suffered a foot injury that kept him out for much of his final prep season.

These days, Hughes is still dealing with a heavy heart. Just two weeks ago, his younger brother tragically passed away.

So this season, Hughes has changed uniform numbers and will keep his brother's memory close to his heart on the field.

"I had to go with the No. 12 because my brother wore that number," said Hughes. "He got killed a couple of weeks ago. He was just 17 years old and the last couple of years I have lost three relatives. I lost my grandmother, my dad and now my brother."

To help deal with his heartache, Hughes said he is thankful for the sport he loves so much.

"Without football it would be a lot more stressful situation for me," noted Hughes. "When I step on the football field, all my troubles disappear. Whatever frustration I have, I just take it out on the field."
