I noticed a UMass basketball game was on tv today so I watched some of it. I think they started off hot but now their record is 14-13 overall and 5-10 in their conference. They didn't show shots of Frank Martin on the sidelines at all. I was interested to see if he still acts there like he did at games here.

I've watched parts of several of their games and he does not scream and yell at the players like he did here. Mostly what I saw was him sitting at the end of the bench looking bored. But it's a very small sample size that I've watched.

He sat looking bored here at times also.

Glad to see him producing mediocre teams somewhere other than here.

But our seasons have been the opposite. We started about as bad as we could be. Now we look like a competent team with pretty good outside shooting. They started out pretty good and have been declining as the season wears on. I'll take our upside any day of the week.
We have not been playing that great. We have been playing better. Let’s see how we play against Bama

14-13 sure looks good right now.
It would not look good if we were 14-13 in Martin's 11th year here.

It's kind of like the wagon trains heading across the west to the Pacific Coast. I'm sure right about the time they hid the badlands of the Dakotas, they were probably thinking "Dang, St. Joseph, MO sure looked better than this." Except that St. Joseph's wasn't the goal. We may not get to where we want to be with the current guy either, but it's going to be worse before it gets better.

Frank's teams normally start slow and come on strong too late.

FWIW, FM is coaching at UMASS Amherst. The baseball team opened the season hosting UMASS Lowell. Different campus.

You know what that gets you at the end of the season? Same thing we’ve been getting….nothing.

Our team is showing some improvement. It was time for Frank to move on. Obviously Branden is playing a big role in their mediocrity. Was ready to see him go after his ranting and the fact het let his son play over Josh Gray and others. I am sure Branden is a good kid, but he was not a power, five basketball player, and Frank played him relentlessly to our demise. It was time for a parting of the ways.

Nothing motivates players more than “I asked you an effing question a$$hole”……gotta love that coaching style with .500 results.

Glad he’s gone. I will never forget, watching a game last year at some neutral site like in rock Hill or something, and hearing Frank scream as it was going to break “you’re an effing embarrassment” to one of our players. It was quiet in the gym and it was such a warm fuzzy moment for all the kids sitting with their parents to enjoy.

14-13 in year11 would be the equivalent of Stoops success at KY in year 10. Ray would have probably given him an extension and bump.

Big wow……it was a typical game he or any coach should have won if I remember. I liked Frank and appreciated the final four run. But the last few years were tiresome and our constant mediocrity while having players you always were expecting to break out and be consistent was odd. He had players afraid to take shots for fear of being yanked. Every player to a tee would make a mistake, and while running back on defense look over at him for their dog cussing out.

His playing of his son so many minutes in key situations did it for me. We should be able to buy that mediocrity any year with any coach.

Amen Brother. Don't think we will ever see A Roach, Winters, Joyce, English again but they sure made basketball fun to watch. An Martin couldn't carry McGuire's Jockey strap.
Yes, I pine for the ACC which we left 50+ years ago. With bringing in Ga Tech, F$U, poaching the old Big East over 15 years ago, and Maryland leaving as well, that ACC no longer exists.

Honestly I think Paris is doing better in year one than Martin did. We’re their “inherited messes” really that different?
Time will tell if Paris can achieve at the level that Martin did (the good years at least right?).
One can hope.

Imagine if Georgia Tech was still in the SEC. It begs the question, would they be good or the conference would just have another Vanderbilt?

Please don't let ourselves be drawn into a discussion about "Are we better than UMass?"

As a former coach I can tell you that you can jump on a kid and correct his/her mistakes but then you move on.....With Frank it almost seemed like he was more belittling the player than correcting him.I've seen him spend the whole timeout period screaming at a player and not coaching the other guys...Very few players will play for a coach like that today.Too many other good coaches who don't do it that way.

It took Martin 4 seasons to produce a ɓig winner here. He did the same in year 5. It was all down hill after year 5 . That's why he is no longer here.

Tulane would have been the SEC's other Vanderbilt. The Jackets were competitive in football, basketball, etc. Green Wave were competitive in Tennis at the end of their time in the SEC.

What about those who to "teams" moving from once conference to another rather than schools making such moves??

Yes, they are, but if I was part of a wagon train heading through them in the late 1800s, looking for a nice place to start a new live, they would not have been at the top of my list. In fact, they would have been near the bottom. lol

Mugsie Bogues, who played in the NBA, was 5'3". Kevin Hart is 5'4". The comedian Rob Schneider is 5'3". Al Pacino is 5'6" (when he was showing off his "liitle friend" the trajectory was probably someone about 5' tall). Based upon "google" the "average" male mexican is 5'5". Alex and Cousin Eddie were involved in some serious drug dealing....

Actually I was on a wagon train circa 1870 in the badlands and saw all the wild game (buffalo, deer, entelope, elk) I 'd think I was in heaven.
