In the present day, I'm very happy living here in Montana (the badlands would be OK too). In the 1870s, if I'm being honest, I don't think I'd want to move my family here. For the last 2 1/2 days, the temperature at my house has not gotten above 0. When I woke up this morning, it was -15. But this week is quite a bit warmer than the week before Christmas when we hit -40. I'd have to burn a lot of buffalo chips in my little cabin fireplace to stay warm in those conditions. lol. Additionally, I don't worry about getting scalped when I'm out and about today.Actually I was on a wagon train circa 1870 in the badlands and saw all the wild game (buffalo, deer, entelope, elk) I 'd think I was in heaven.
Of course, people back then were just tougher, so maybe I would have been too.
But to my original point, the people were headed to the Pacific. That was their goal. If the Pacific is one's goal, the badlands of SD in the 1870s would have been an extremely harsh, unsafe, and generally undesirable area. But to reach their ultimate goal, they had to endure some true hardship first by crossing a place that was less hospitable than the one they left. It was analogous to our current basketball program. It may not get better, but if it does get better, we knew it was likely going to get worse first.
