Definitely see it here in the DC metro area. Tons of recruiters from southern schools like Clemson, South Carolina, Alabama and Auburn up here in schools with recruiting pitches. Lots of kids, whose parents have more conservative values are pushing their kids there as well.

I’ve talked to handful of these families with Notre Dame ties. It seems to be a pretty mixed bag to this point. Some students absolutely love going to school in the South. Some students despise it and leave as soon as they can.

A lot of parents will admit that the quality of education is not the same as they’d be getting at Northern schools. But their sales pitch, especially when it comes to promises of jobs, is pretty convincing. And of course sports play a gigantic role as well. That’s why SEC and ACC schools dump so much money into athletics.

Like I said before, Greek Life appears to play a huge role in how much enjoyment students get out of going “Down South”. I’ve even heard stories of certain fraternities and sororities either waving or reducing the normal fees associated with joining, but I’ve never spoken to anyone who it’s actually happened to. So take that for what it’s worth

Personally, I’d never send a child of mine to a Southern school. It had nothing to do with my politics and everything to do with safety and educational quality. As a father of daughters, the way Southern culture views sexual violence is terrifying. I’ve lived in The South and seen and heard it firsthand. I’ve also worked with graduates from major SEC schools and they’ve left me underwhelmed.

But make no mistake, they’re coming and they’re coming aggressively. Not just for students either. I’ve seen some eye popping job offers for techs and engineers in the IT field. Even folks with less than 5 years of practical experience are being offer anywhere from 50% to 150% more than they’re making now. Northern schools had better get it all into one sock and quickly or we’re going to start seeing a lot more closures and consolidations.

I am pretty sure my daughter will be living in Austin in a day few years. She loved the place on a recent visit with a UT grad.

I do not agree with your observation on the quality of universities in the south. Things have really changed in the last 25 years. Their growth and new facilities have been matched with the attraction of first rate faculty, especially at the graduate level.

I’m speaking to my personal experiences in my field (IT) as well as the military officers who I served with during my time.

I’m sure that there are fields where they excel. IT has not been one of them in my experience.
