Typical Franklin.

Instead of recruiting towards developing a complete and deep roster, he over-signs in one position.

Nothing ever changes with Mr. Panic.

Sure. Anyway...

Nice pick up here. He just might eat his way to DE or be wearing #11. Maybe we should allow the staff to help with that process.

Complaining about a 4 star LB staying home is pretty crazy....basically someone looking for anything to complain about. You can question his inability to take the last step for PSU...valid....this was nonsense.
I thought about putting him on ignore many, many times, but the comic relief he provides is just too good to pass up. The only thing better is if nobody ever actually responded to his nonsense so he could yell at the rain all by himself.

It may be dumb.....but it is correct.
No it's dumb, very dumb. PSU will lose at least 2 LB's next year with a possibility of more. Do a projection of depth for 3 years from now when they are sophs and probably ready to make an impact.....go ahead. In the age of the portal you recruit full classes.....see below for a loose guideline.

QB's 1 every year...2 if you have portal defections sometimes.
RB's 1-2....see QB comments.
OL 4-5 depends on the year and portal
TE 1-2
WR 2-3, maybe 4 with defections

DL 4-5 Hybrid LB/DE
LB 2-3 maybe 4 as some are tweeners.
CB's 2-3
S 2

If you take the high number on all of these you're looking at 25-26, so yes the comments about not taking a 3rd LB in state who is a 4 star on 3 of 4 sites is just plain stupid.

As a reminder, the 2020 RB roster consisted of:

Journey Brown R-Jr.
Deyvn Ford So.
Noah Cain So.
Keyvone Lee Fr.
Caziah Holmes Fr.
Tank Smith walk on R-Fr.
Joe Bruno walk on R-Fr.

Everyone speculated they over recruited the RB room. Fast forward to 2022 and Keyvone Lee was the only scholarship RB from that group on the roster.

I believe it was in 2021 when they had to start Devyn Ford because the rest of the scholarship RB were injured.

Position groups can get thin quickly, but you know that. You just need something to cry about when things are going well.

What you have is some antiquated folks still trying to figure out that game has changed and Joe isn't the HC anymore IMO. Between the Portal and now NIL demands you need to take a full class every year because you have zero guarantees you get more than a semester out of some of the players. Some get on campus and realize they aren't a P5 players, some won't want to wait their turn, or some just want a different atmosphere. Taking a 3rd LB who is a 4 star is by no means a panic move, but some folks just want to complain about anything at all.

Especially when that 3rd LB could very well end up at DE down the road, as some writers speculate.

It's obvious that we can't play with the big boys in the portal, so until we can we have to cover all bases in recruiting.

I'm not going to bring up names, but LB talent and overall depth is weak and the fact that certain players continue to see the field demonstrates the lack of talent that is behind them. Has been a problem. The interior d-line lacks the monster 5 star guy who can help hide the weaker/less talented LBs, but we still don't have that setup here so you need to stack depth and talent at LB.

Seems like a good pick up. But, the big takeaway for me from the article is that he's a 4* but ranked 314th nationally. That means way, way too many 4*s, especially since there are only 32 or so 5*s.

He's ranked a 4 stars on 3 recruiting services. PSU offered him last year very early on and UM offered in July before his junior year. He's also in the top 220 on Rivals and the other 2 sites don't have national rankings yet. Long story short is Manny and Tom Allen liked him in addition to Terry Smith. You never know how all of the kids will work out, but he got his offer very early on from PSU and they do seem to identify kids early on. They may not land them all, but they do seem to get a majority of their early offers to work out...even if they end up at UGa and then tOSU.

So, here is a question.....

....given the way NIL/Portal has changed things, should

1. Players who are making NIL money get reduced amount for the athletic scholarships (or take them off schollie altogether)?
I don't profess to know the ins and outs of how they actually get paid, but if a kid is making...$1.6MM (as Arch Manning was supposed to have been making), why is he also getting a full scholarship? That schollie money could go to another kid on the team who is not able to get NIL $.

Nice idea but good luck mandating that.

Future 2026 PSU transfer:

St. Joseph's Prep LB Anthony Sacca drops Penn State from list of contenders: https://on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/news/linebacker-anthony-sacca-announces-top-schools
The fact that he hasn’t committed up until now is all I needed to know about his interest. I’m beginning to think the HC at SJP has an issue with PSU or the staff. Maybe he and Infante didn’t hit it off and he is steering kids away from PSU? Just spitballing here, but something seems amiss with recruiting SJP.

And yet somehow we had - what? - the second-highest ranked defense in the country last year. And while we are six months away from season start, many pundits don't see a significant drop for 2024.

Honestly, I think many people just vomit-type without considering if their comment is well-conceived or just random ant tracks.

Some insight for you that I have- neither Tony (the elder) or John said anything to young Anthony about PSU. Neither did the coaches at SJP. The youngster was being recruited by Terry Smith, who is close with Tony (the elder), but was told that neither Tony, Anthony's mom or John would influence Anthony - he was left to make his own decisions. He wants to make his own way - he has been infatuated with ND for a while and OSU is a bit of a relative newcomer.

Some kids want to make their own way - good for them.

Good for him, although ND makes me want to puke. This isn’t the first high profile SJP recruit to pass on PSU though. Maybe I’m wrong, but it feels like they are being persuaded to go elsewhere? It feels like the HC from NJ that talked Brandon Wimbush out of coming to PSU situation.
