What do you get from James Franklin for $7.5 million?

Coach Franklin is one of the highest, if not the highest, paid coaches in the B1G. $7 million guaranteed and $500,000 bonus retention in 2022.

So it is fair to ask if Penn State is getting what it is paying for since hiring him in 2014? You be the judge.

#1. 10 win season this year.

The good: Good enough to be competitive in the current NCAA rankings, and would likely qualify the team for a spot in the new playoff structure.

Perspective: 14 teams have ten wins so far this year, with 5 more going for their tenth win in a bowl game. 8 teams have more than 10 wins. Three of the wins were against out of conference teams with a cumulative record of 18-19.

#2. Franklin has a 77-36 record in his nine years at Penn State. That is a 68% winning percentage.

#3. Franklin has a 49-30 B1G conference record. That is a 62% winning percentage. His out of conference record is 28-6, for a 82% winning percentage.

The good: He has won more than half his games in conference.

Perspective: His overall record has been greatly improved by his out of conference record, with those games primarily played against non power five opponents.

#4. Franklin has a very poor record against top ten teams played since he began coaching at Penn State. His record against top ten teams is 2-15 as the Penn State Coach. His record at Vanderbilt was 0-2.

Perspective: Brett Bielema 5-18, Greg Schiano 2-9, PJ Fleck 1-6, Jim Harbaugh 8-14, Kirk Ferentz 12-24, Jeff Brohm 3-6, all have better records against top ten teams.

#5. Franklin has a 1-8 record vs. tOSU, 3-6 vs. Michigan, and 4-5 vs. Michigan State.

It is what it is. Maybe with the playoffs expanding we stand a better chance of attracting better overall talent. Perhaps the elite HS talent that pools with the top four or five programs will be more willing to look elsewhere. Or the elite portal talent will pool with the playoff teams ranked 6 through 12 due to the lack of playing time available at the top four or five schools with the high-end recruits. Sea change is coming.

That still doesn't change the fact that it's a horse 💩 take. Congrats

I am now a James Franklin homer but frankly for PSU to return to elite status HE must take the next step up. He is an exceptional recruiter, he is exceptional at demonstrating broad, long term value to the kids who go through the program either by promoting the education or their successes in the NFL. What he lacks is game-day coaching talents, increasing the physicality of the road graders, and risk taking with talent. He must also change the mentality that PSU is a stepping stone university. it is the biggest change from the Paterno era to the Franklin era.

With that said, let's just compare Brett Bullfrog's tenure at Arkansas since his top ten record is used as a comparison. The Bullfrog went to Arkansas with probably no limitations on what he needed to win as long as he didn't get caught. I suspect he found shortfalls in their resources. So like Franklin he had to convert a middling program into a winner while upgrading the resources to do it. He was Mr 6-6 and ran out of town. JCF took us to the Rose Bowl on the same trajectory that Brett was asked to do it. Now certainly, the SEC West was stronger than the BIG East at the time but he did it.

JCF has asked a lot from PSU. We have a right to ask a lot of him. Right now through the OSU game next year, we are both at a point where we can see if it has been worth it. This is the time where he must prove it by stepping up. WE ARE...

Funny how you failed to cite the records of the coaches who are paid more than Franklin who have worse records. Then again on second thought not surprising at all.

If you've ever worked in a school district....you are familiar with a common gene. It's known as the "know it all gene." Some folks are born with it, others develop it over time. It's often exhibited by the school custodian. You know, the one with the 9th grade education. If you give him the opportunity, he will tell you what's wrong with the entire school district and what the BOE, Superintendent of Schools, Principals and teachers should do.
That gene is manifested here in abundance.
Fanboys gifted with this "special" gene can tell you who the best players are....hint....they are on the bench or left the team...

What should frighten us is that these people are permitted out and about without supervision.

If a modern-day college coach is only judged by what happens on game day, then the OP has somewhat of a point here and there. That's just myopic, however, when you consider everything that a coach must contend with and manage in the modern era.

There have always been massive egos, dirty recruiting, overbearing parents, dimwit fans, Title IX, and meddling administrators and boosters; and they're all still there. On top of all of that Head football coaches must now be more like corporate CEOs than ever before, and the recent additional concerns of NIL, transfer portal, social media, pandemic, etc. have only added to it all. Frankly, game day must be a day of great relief from the day to day, minute to minute stress of managing a major college football program today.

I'm quite proud to have Coach Franklin as PSU's coach as we move into this modern era of the sport. He's a class act who treats his players and their families with respect. I think that he tries to be honest with all of us while trying to provide privacy and dignity to those who need it in the moment.

Not sure why anyone cares what he makes. We should certainly care about the results, but, if you think CJF's results don't match his salary, would you feel any better about said results if he made less? My opinion: 2022 was great and the future looks better. We're getting better players and I only hope he can get through the next couple of years with this staff intact.

I didnt bring up elite - I was responding to the poster whom I quoted. Ask that person to define elite. Go back through the thread to find that post.

I actually have no idea what the definition is, in context with current day CFB

This is getting far too confusing. You’re asking for a definition of “elite”, but then inserting “sustained elite status” like you already have a definition. This is classic goal post moving and I refuse to be drawn into your convoluted house of mirrors.

Penn State has never maintained elite status. Short bursts of really high level, yes (late 1960s, early to mid 1980s). But it's never been sustained.

Notre Dame is always elite, just ask their rabid fan base and soak up the hype machine propaganda. They are God's gift to college football, literally, and like to brag about how many coaches and players attend Mass on a daily basis. They play a selfless schedule for the greater benefit of the Service Academies and all the schools having down seasons, as they cherry-pick their cupcake schedules. And because of Rudy, who should be on Mount Rushmore, they deserve an automatic selection to the playoffs every year.

Maybe but they did lose to Marshall this year and they are certainly not elite. Nor were Chad Pennington or Randy Miss playing

Following the most horrific period in our school's history he became coach at a time we needed someone to calm the seas and stabilize the program. He has done so with nothing but class in every possible way. The way he deals with his players, the media, the community and the university. Nothing embarrassing (ever) in the way he acts or carries himself. Including his wife and daughters. All class. His players love him. They recruit for him and stay in touch. He produces NFL talent every year and our stadium is filled. He is what any school should want in a coach. Especially us after the horror of 2011. Excluding a few, he holds his own with any coach at any school. We are lucky to have him.
