What percentage enthusiasm do you retain for PSU and college football from pre-transfer/NIL levels?

this really is an obsession- it seems unhealthy

Yes, totally obsessed. On a Penn State message board. Now I see why folks prefer the pay site - less clutter, more real discussion.

Over a decade ago, after 40 years of season tickets, I realized that there are so many things more important in life than beating Ohio State or Michigan. Looking back, I have memories of some great games, but the costs, in terms of my time and treasure, were simply not worth it. I still watch the games, but in the comfort of my home, with family and friends, and at a fraction of the cost. The memories are still there, but they are about joyful times (win or lose) with people I care about.
For me, it was worth it, as I got a lot of time with my brother (as well as some life-long friends), which we likely would not have had without the commonality of football, given that we lived about 10 hours apart. But now? Not so much, though we try to go to the odd road game. But it was a fun time, that I recall with fondness.

Your situation certainly lent itself to game attendance. I largely went to games with my wife and daughters, which was fine, but we could have enjoyed watching at home and, over 40 years, saved well over 100 grand. I realize being in the stadium as the clock ticks down on an Ohio State win is magical, but I did the math recently on what I would now have had I stayed home, saved the money, and put it in my local bank at at average interest rates over 40 years. Conservatively I would be sitting on $250,000. However, had I put it in blue chip stocks, I would have about 1.3 million. Those numbers fill me with deep regret.

We realized about 2013 that we could go to Europe every other year if we stopped going to most of the home games..... There were other factors of course, such as the BOT and Alumni Assn selling out the fans and alumni. But I don't regret the time we spent at games and traveling to Happy Valley either.

The numbers? For me, not a big deal, as I was good at saving anyway. And there's only so much money one can spend.

My biggest problem was I was obsessed with Penn State football and never looked for ways to cut costs. For example, we generally drove from Pittsburgh to State college and stated in hotels for 2 nights. On occasion we drove up and back on game day, which saved not only lodging, but 2 days of meals on the road. I always donated more than required to get my seats, sometimes a lot more. I bought 2 programs at every game. Hundreds now sit in boxes in my basement. I also have hundreds of Penn State souvenirs, including absurd items like "Wipe Woody" toilet paper and "Sh*t on Pitt" pins. Good gawd! My frivolous spending knew no bounds. None of it means much to me now. Hell, it didn't mean much then. The "Wipe Woody" was funny, for like 5 minutes, but then it was nothing more than a waste of 5 bucks.

Too hard on yourself. We all can get caught up in the moment at times. This is just where many of us were at the time. The events since then, as well as the inevitable aging process, have caused us to view things from a different (and more reasonable) perspective.

eBay could be your friend. Sell your stuff to folks who have not reached your level of enlightenment. Good luck!

Yes. I realize you're right. Still, I have a PSU friend who was more measured in his passion and attended a game every season or two. His wisdom has served him well financially through the years. Ah well. Too soon old...too late smart!

For me, I look at the home games as an opportunity to get together with friends I see only once or twice a year, or even less. So I try to make 1 or 2 home games per year.

I used to travel a lot for business. But that has changed over the past decade, and I kinda miss it. So I have been using Penn State Athletics as an excuse to travel.

Try to get to 1 or 2 road games and/or the bowl game each year. And have traveled to Des Moines for the NCAA tourney, Mohegan Sun also for hoops, Allentown for the Frozen Four, etc.

Overall I feel less emotionally invested in football than I was in the past, but still enjoy that it enables me to connect with friends and gives me an excuse to travel.
