How do you handle this? First off, I know if UF wants Mullen, there is nothing we can do to compete with what they can offer. With that being said, what kind of public statement will be made and when should it occur? When can we expect someone from the top to release information on this subject?

I'd call Mullen and say look, if UF offers give us a chance to match (or something comparable).

Other than that I wouldn't release a statement or anything, because the press and exposure will be invaluable, because every college football show from now until will say things like "Dan Mullen did an outstanding job at Mississippi State this past year".. ect..

If he showed success here, big time programs would come calling. And no one is blaming Greg Byrne. Im just curious how you handle this situation if you are in his shoes.</p>

I would talk with Dan and see if he has an assessment of his chances. If Dan gets the offer then you deal with that but our biggest problem is the timing. We need to know if Dan is a serious candidate and get some sort of statement out to calm the recruiting waters and of course we need to know if we have to start a coaching search. It sucks but isn't it better than having a coach that no one else in the nation would even consider?

is have a private meeting with Dan and talk to him about it, and see if I could gauge his interest. And I would tell him, that if he wanted to talk to them, I would allow it, but if they do, give us a chance to talk and we'll see what we can work out.

That said, I would start to get ready just in case, to cover myself and the program. The first guy I would call is Gary Patterson. The second guy I would call is Rick Stockstill at MTSU. Then I would call Chris Petersen and give Gene a gag order.

1. Mullen's actions over the next 48 hours will tell us all we need to know about his intentions. See my other recent post on this. 2. Byrne will be slick and discrete. I believe he will suss this out over the next day or so and we'll have another coach hired very quickly if need be. Unfortunately, our recruiting would be destroyed this year if Mullen left unless we hired one of his assistants.

I think the main guy we would lose out on would be Newton. We may lose others, but I think we can still get most of our targets.

Top shelf humor there.

Potentially rescues our offense and drops Auburn back in the tank at the same time. Win win situation.

make a quick hire of someone like Malzahn and perhaps pull CN with...? I question if any southerner really wants to go that far west, regardless of where he's played Juco ball.
