Would you begin to question Mullen if we go 6-6 this season?...

You ask me "why am I so confident"? Why are you NOT confident? Look I think the slogan for this season's football team should be "this isn't your paw paw or daddy's bulldogs". We have good coaching, we have a good AD both are things that the 17'n bears would KILL for! We have gotten better EVERY year so far, but so is EVERY OTHER TEAM IN THE WEST! This isn't Jackie's SEC West, back then the East was the cream of the crop. NOT ANYMORE! We will win ALL OOC games, we will BEAT Georgia, we WILL beat S.C at home in a STATEMENT game, we will beat Kentucky we will play Bama better than we have since Mullen's been here in a loss, I'm 50/50 on Arky & we will beat the bears. That's how I see it playing out. To sum it up, I'm also a coach and as a coach your basic job is to put players in position (via film, practice, walkthrough or whatever) to succeed. But sometimes they might JUST be a little out of position to make a play. Whether on O or D the kids either make the play or they don't. How much youth is on the field right now? We are a young football team right now that is REALISTICALLY a few years away from even being in the same breath as LSU or Bama. This **** that's going down @ Oxford only helps us in recruiting. Has Mullen even signed a ACTUAL 5* yet? Give him time, Dan is STILL the damn man for me and he sure as hell should be for you too.

1. Beat everybody we're supposed to beat.
2.Upset one team.
3. Beat Ole Miss.

At this point in the schedule,it will get us 7-5. It's also overachieving a little with the 1 upset - UGA, USC, BAMA OR Arkanasas. And if it's the Music City or Liberty,we shouldreach 8-5.

Everyone who says they would be disapointed must be from another planet. As a state fan, I cherish bowl games and want to string as many as possible together...

And I haven't enjoyed having it cut away. We should have beat Auburn and I hate saying next year. I'm with those who say we still win one game no one gave us. The problem is everyone of us who don't play want us to win, just like (certainly not more than) the guys who play.

The truth is the SEC west is really tough this year. I'm just happy we aren't OM. They like to tell us we aren't them and I'm happy to say that this year, we aren't.

I don't want to be them next year either and that is my real hope for the team, tat we never find ourselves at their level again - always better is what I want. If we do that, eventually we will become a SECcontender. Just not too likely to happen this year, unless horrible-bad things happen to the other SEC west teams we still need to play before Atlanta time- things that I wouldn'twant to see happening to anyone.

I thought we were getting to a new level in the last three games last year with the passing game. What happened to the running backs catching passes in open space?

The Auburn game says we still don't have a pre set play to score on the one yard line that works. After LSU and now Auburn, we need something unstoppable like the DT blocking for running back.

As I watched the game last weekI kept thinking that we were slow and could not afford to take the steps we were taking behind the line, we needed to run downhill or at 45 degrees. However, I watched the LSU highlights at Tigerdroppings today and you can see that we just are not at that level of talent yet and I'm not sure you will get there with MS. players. That may be the problem with Mullen's strategy, we can own the state and still be below par.

6 and 6 willbe a good season for this team.

Back to back bowls is a sign of progress and a rare thing for us. I was hoping for 8-4 but knew 6-6 was also a possibility.

(1) Mullen has done a pretty good job in working with what he inherited (some good players, no doubt). Just his work with Relf alone ought to make him a HOF coach. Relf was really raw and had basically no work done with him. So, he can coach up.

(2) Mullen, agree or disagree, felt like he could reach the level of consistent winning with Mississippi players and players w/n 5 hrs of Starkville. Now, those of us who have been here know how hard that is because there is not always a spread of position talent. 2011 is the year of the DL. We seem to have cycles in position talent. But the fact that Mullen is willing to shake out everything from big houses to out houses looking shows he is going to shop at home first. This brings family and local fans to State. I agree that some of what he is looking for is going to be found outside Mississippi. That will come with consistent winning. Can we beat out the big boys of the SEC? Not likely but possible for a few players. Jackie took a little while to draw some better players. He also got us to Atlanta with middle of the road talent.

(3) Remember when Northwestern came out of nowhere to win big back some years ago? It's possible to get there. Harder now maybe, but possible. It will always be hard to beat the LSUs, Bamas, Floridas, etc. But a number of schools have got there over the years. It is harder to maintain that level. (Miami?) Even the big boys have down years. We just happen to be in the toughest division of the toughest football conference in the country. We may not be able to dominate but we can compete. THAT is what I mean by being good.

We are close. We can still miss it. But we are close. I think that with a solid staff and middle of the road players we can be very good. Maybe not to the level of battling for a NC or conference championship every single year. But we can be very good on a consistent basis. The foundation is here. I just think Mullen is the guy that can get us there.

We have 3 OOC opponents left (UT Martin, UAB, and La Tech). Assume 3 wins there and wins over KY and TSUN we'd be at 6-6 if we lost the others. <div>
</div><div>Anyway.... Winning 1 out of 3 would get us to 7-5, 2 8-4, all 3, 9-3.<div>
</div><div>Would I be upset if we went 6-6? Yeah a little. Would I be happy with 7-5? Not happy, but content. 8-4? Happy. 9-3 Ecstatic!</div></div><div>
</div><div>That said, I think we go 7-5 with losses to Bama and ARK a given and split with UGA and USC. I could live with that.</div>

Short answer is no. I will not question him just because we go 6-6. State plays 2 teams with much more talent; two teams with likely a good bit more talent (USCe and Arky), and two teams with equal toslightly less talent (Au and UGA,both on the road). We should have beaten Auburn, butit happens, especially on the road. Not exactly a tremendous underachievement to go 6-6.

Just sucks becauseState had a chance to have a really good season this year, and I think we're going to have trouble doing more than treading water at the 6-7 win mark the next couple of years (which is still pretty good) considering what we're losing and the recruiting classes we've had. Busting out 8 wins plus a bowl game would have really given State momentum for making the next step.Might have missed a little bit of a window of opportunity here.

diciplined. he's made a qb out of relf (who'd a thunk it). IMO the 9-10 win koolaide was never realistic for msu this yr. but msu is light yrs ahead of where you were 3 yrs ago. i'm not convinced mullen is the next coming of knute but he's doing a good job and 6-6 shouldn't look too bad to msu fans right now. if he's still 6-6 two yrs from now then maybe.

the honest truth is if he figures out how to recruit better, he's dangerous.

because if you`re going to win with diamonds in the rough you`ve got to be a damn good football coach. If Dan wins only 6 this year he didn`t do a very good job. The Auburn game was a real charlie foxtrot.</p>

...with that logic. We have to be good enough to battle for a national championship to just win our own division.

6-6 and going to a bowl for the second year in a row is very difficult to complain about considering our overall, and especially our recent, history. If we are losing our games and are simply beaten by a superior team, with better talent, then there isn't a lot to say. I just hope we play our asses off until the last whistle.

I will bedisappointed if we are playing anymore teams in the 4th quarter, down by 13 with the ball, 2 minutes to go, and we somehow end up with 3 time outs taken to the house when it is over. Things like that are inexcusable.

/not trying to thread hijack with that last comment

Not really upset at anybody, but definately disappointed.

I was disappointed in the defense after the Auburn game- and rightfully so. I am disappointed about the lack of o-line depth. Not sure that's Dan's fault- look at Croom's classes four-five years ago and notice the lack of o-linemen in them. That's killing us right now.

If we gave Croom five years- LT of course wanted seven, then I am all for letting Dan have at least five to seven years to see what he can do. We are in year three of Dan and he has not only won more than Croom did in four years- or will have very shortly barring disaster- he has won more than Jackie Sherrill did in his FIRST three years- actually, he only lacks a couple of wins, but again, barring disaster. Emphasis on Jackie's first three- not his last three years. And yeah, Jackie beat Auburn and Arkansas his first two years, but often times when we beat some those West teams, they were down- same could be said for Croom as well.

The bottom line is we need to take care of business and at the very least split with South Carolina and Georgia, or pull an upset over Bama or Arkansas. I think the odds of one of those scenarios happening is pretty good.

running the ball with ten seconds and no timeouts vs Auburn was stupid. Not using any timeouts vs LSU was stupid. 2 huge game management blunders in back to back games can't happen when you're fielding a less talented team because you get out recruited. Mullen has to outcoach versus the big boys to make up for the talent difference. He's 0-2 so far this year.

First of all who's saying we'll have depth issues @ RB? Have you seen NIck Griffin? That guy is a 17'n BEAST! I saw him pre-bowl practices run over Virges and shake off a nasty stick by Nikoe (yes Nikoe). And as far as QB is concerned, a QB's best friend is a nice running game. And between Nick, Josh and Darius we'll be okay taking pressure off of whoever is behind center (although my money's on Dak). I never said we were gonna be "great", but us winning 8, 9 games is pretty good to me at least. Yes +#$ getting paid 2 mil and going 6-6 is gonna be an issue, even for me. But it ain't gonna happen, not this year (again baring no injuries). Plain and simple with Tobias getting hurt and moving some OL men around guys will NEED TO STEP UP! But I didn't think Dillon did a bad job (especially against LSU's DL). Clausell needs to work on his footwork and his punch. As far as the issues of WR, guys just need to do a better job running routes. To me if there is an issues with this team, it's TE. Marcus Green played like he **** the bed before the game. I mean, he missed blocks & dropped HUGE passes against LSU. Look at it this way, if your a rookie QB in the NFL going against an elite D, what's that QB's best out? Because let's face it, LSU has a NFL defense and Relf hasn't seen a D THAT fast before. What's his best out? CHECK DOWN's! TE's & RB's that are gonna be hard for LB's to account for. If the TE is dropping DRIVE SAVING passes that's pretty bad! Now luckily Vick & Darius were doing a good job, taking up slack catching the ball. I mean Relf was 9/11 @ halftime. That's nice numbers, for anybody. But guys we'll be fine. Hit me up on twitter @ hulkbuster77.

Okay runnng the ball against Auburn: How did we get to that point in the game anyway? Ummm Running the ball. If you throw the ball, you playto Auburn's strength. SPEED. They may not be asstrong as LSU, but they are just as fast. They just don't have a defense. If you would've said "running the ball on the side wherea red shirt freshman has replaced a senior @ LT." I would'veagreed with you.

Okay now the time outs issue vs.LSU:You do realize when it's a "main strream"Thursday night game they have TV timeouts likeALL THE TIME, right? If you mention timeouts right before halftime, I know what he was doing. He waswanting us to get that1st down FIRST, then go from there.SoI wouldn't call those two things "blunders". Both were decent decisions (minus running to Clausell's side to score that TD vs. Auburn).
So he's 0-2 vs. a team that cheated their *** offas well as the refs & against the#3 team in the nation? Yep, he sure is. Apparently you hadus beating LSU (you need some sheers for all THAT wool)? I'll bet you thought we were gonna get smashed just like 85% of the crowd at DWS.Man, some people.........some people.

jackstefano or whatever your name is. First of all, I don't see Mullen here fr the next 10 years, so he would have to do it before then. Second, that's a bold *** claim but then again you are punching a keyboard from God knows where. So to humor you, I'll take that bet little guy.
