Absolutely. I thought it would be either them or A&M but I guess A&M must already have their NIL for recruits oiled and greased.
Here's the thing from the way I see it. The teams like A&M that boosters were already paying big money for kids to commit couldn't give a crap about NIL. It's less work to pay the kids straight up until somebody stops it.

20 years ago he would have further refined his skills, competed and been drafted high with a lucrative contract and NFL stardom. Like Larry Fitzgerald. Today he first signs a lucrative contract, refines his skills, gets drafted with another lucrative contract and achieves NFL stardom. Such is life for top players in College these days.
BUT, my question is-like so many pro's...."Once a large chunk get a big pay day in high school/college, how many might lose that "competitive edge?" Sure some will double dip but I suspect it might hurt some more than it helps. What if it means they party more or waste money on fake friends/girlfriends. What if teammates with no NIL get envious? Are these relevant questions or am I missing the boat?

I totally agree. Addison is a special receiver and if he had gone to a higher level program he might have won the Biletnikoff Award last year and Pickett could have proven himself to be a 1st round draft pick, maybe even the 1st QB taken. And if they had come here they might have played for a top 20 team and won a Conference Championship. What the hell were they thinking?
Well, I am SO curious to see the WR do just as good in the Pac-12. What's also interesting is that Slovis was for USC and now PITT and Addison is going to USC from Pitt-I just found that to be interesting-no insinuations being made.

Athletic reporting he's going to "appear" in the portal today. Link but behind a pay wall. My understanding is that as long as he had his papers into Pitt on time it doesn't matter when Pitt submits them.

Bye Bye Pitt

In articles I read indications are that schools are calling athletes before they decide to go in portal-AD Kraft said there are "sharks in the water"-probably referring to stuff like that! Are there regulations on much anymore!

Who enforces that?

I'm sure the NCAA is sitting back with a huge schadenfreude boner at this point. They fought against this and now they get to sick back and let everyone reap what they've sown. The NCAA is not going to do a damn thing to punish anyone for tampering in these deals and transfers. They are just going to get their popcorn and enjoy the chaos.

Sure, because we know that players at Pitt have no chance to prove themselves NFL worthy. Just ask Aaron Donald.

Pitt has a very good history of putting plenty of guys into the NFL that end up being elite guys. The idea that if you go to Pitt they won't be able to develop into NFL stars is just bias from anyone claiming it.

From the article:

”This seems like a wakeup call not only to Pitt in this new college football world, but to other programs that perhaps do not have the glitz, glamour and national cache of other programs. There are clear tiers among Power 5 schools when it comes to national publicity, television opportunities, revenue and facilities. In the way coaches leave for jobs in higher tiers, perhaps this is a sign players of Addison's caliber will begin doing so more frequently. We have already seen it in the Group of 5 level, where teams are having a harder time holding on to good players they scouted and developed. Is the same about to happen with Power 5 All-Americans?

Intentionally or not, Addison is sending a signal that what Pitt has to offer -- as a Power 5 conference champion -- is clearly no longer going to be enough for some players moving forward.”

And,

”Pac-12 commissioner George Kliavkoff told ESPN it's imperative to enforce rules prohibiting the use of NIL as a recruiting inducement or pay for play.

"Either the NCAA is going to get its act together in enforcing this," he said Wednesday, "or I'm going to be pushing for a smaller group to figure out how to create and enforce the NIL rules that we all agree on related to inducement and pay for play. The amount of an NIL payment should be commensurate with the work done as a backstop to make sure we're not using it related to inducement and pay for play.””

It’s a good read.

It’s a good read.

What is the NCAA going to enforce? This is their policy:

The policy provides the following guidance to college athletes, recruits, their families and member schools:

  • Individuals can engage in NIL activities that are consistent with the law of the state where the school is located. Colleges and universities may be a resource for state law questions.
  • College athletes who attend a school in a state without an NIL law can engage in this type of activity without violating NCAA rules related to name, image and likeness.
  • Individuals can use a professional services provider for NIL activities.
  • Student-athletes should report NIL activities consistent with state law or school and conference requirements to their school.

That's it. They punted to the states. I don't see the difference between being able to entice a recruit with playing time, nice dorms, uniforms, beach access, or a particular major versus the school using it's NIL collectives to also offer money/condo/etc. The have's will keep on having; the have nots will keep on spending to catch up (but won't). You will have to get all the schools/conferences to band together to put some kind of consistent framework around this, but why would they want to do that? NIL money is not their money - it's from donors. The only way to standardize this nationwide is for the money to come from the schools, and again, why do that? Pay for play as a concept can never be enforced; these NIL deals don't mention anything about where you have to go to school or how much you have to play. Short of enforceable contracts between player/school, I see this just becoming the new norm. Until Pitt and others (maybe Penn State too) figure out they're not going to be able to keep up and that spending $90mm on a coach is the wrong use of those funds, they're just to have players continue to hit the portal to cash in.
