Whatever you think of spring football, I found their use of replay and overtime interesting.

Their replay is handled on camera, so you see the discussion, which is informative. But the big thing is how fast they do it. They watch a replay, the guy says what he saw, maybe a second view (he can manipulate which view and the speed) and he makes a call. It's just so very fast compared to the NFL or college.

Then, in OT, each team had three 2-point conversion plays(alternating). I forget what would happen if that failed to determine the winner, it was mentioned, but wasn't necessary.

But a few quick plays and game over. Equal chance for both teams and handled quickly.

Doubt the NFL would ever consider it, but some of these differences struck me as being good ideas.

I'm certain the NFL is watching what the XFL does and will evaluate whatever rules/policies are appealing....

They would be crazy not to. I was just wondering if there was a sense of the NFL not wanting to be seen taking ideas from a "lesser" product.

Yeah, I can see that. But they did eventually adopt the two-point try after a touchdown.

Just like the did with the original XFL. They took a lot of ideas from them

Not doubting you, just honestly don't remember. What ideas did they take?

It gives me hope they might improve their replay and OT.

XFL viewership remains low and is trending down. Opened with a 1.3 million viewership average. Viewership was cut in half in Week 2 to 659,000, and it decreased steadily each week to Week 5 when it had a 267,000 average.

Seems to be following the same ratings trend as all previous spring leagues.

MLB starting early likely hasn't helped the ratings.

Need to give it more than just 2/3 of a season. And you simply cannot compare it to the NFL.

There are some videos on it. But a lot of the camera shots. The overhead camera, I believe it was mostly production things but still it was stuff they took.

The OT and replay could fall into production categories.

Also the NFL and XFL are collaborating on testing rule changes. Like they signed a deal and everything.

That's always the problem with these spring leagues. People excuse the poor ratings because of "fill in the blank with some other sporting event that happens to be going on."

There seems to enough money to keep it afloat in spite of the lack of fan interest, but I'm only pointing out that it appears to be suffering the same ratings fate of previous spring football iterations. Even taking into other sporting events going on, a weekly precipitous decline in viewership isn't a good thing. It's notable, though, that the 2020 XFL started out week 1 with nearly 3x as many viewers as the XFL this year.

I wouldn't be surprised if the NFL ends up underwriting some of the costs of their "lab".....

I really don't follow it all that much. I did watch some of the original XFL way back when, but it seemed way too gimmicky. Are there current NFL rules that were adopted from the spring leagues?

The original XFL was indeed way too gimmicky. Live and learn.

The various PAT options of 2023, while gimmicky, are less so that the "coin toss replacement" from the original XFL. And they might provide useful data for the NFL going forward.
