If what you say were true, then there would only be a 2 team playoff at the end of the season. By that logic every FBS team is playing for the national championship, since regular season success is what gets you into the 12.

Just making the playoffs does NOT equal playing for the national championship. You made the tournament. Hang a banner, sure, but you didn’t play for the national championship. That’s like saying every one of our basketball, baseball, softball, volleyball, soccer, tennis, and golf teams has played for a national championship because they made the NCAA tournament once.
