As a College Recruit

Athletic, coordinated cornerback with some of the best ball skills and pure cover ability at corner in the 2023 cycle. Measured 5-foot-11.5 and around 175 pounds with a 32-inch arm prior to his senior season. A riser on the college camp circuit, earning offers with dominant showings. Turned in the best in-person performance we saw from a corner in the 2023 cycle at LSU's camp. Paired that showing with outstanding film as a senior Ran multiple 40-yard dashes in the 4.4 range with a best of 4.35 seconds. Smooth and technical in coverage with the ability to quickly read wide receivers and flip his hips accordingly. Rarely, if ever surrendered completions in multiple camp appearances. Uses his length to stay attached. Instinctive and mirrors effectively. The 40-yard dash speed transfers over to the field. Has high-end ball production, totaling 11 interceptions as a junior and senior. Also forces an inordinate amount of fumbles with close to 10 strips over his final two seasons of high school football. Also shows playmaking ability as a return man. Helped his team to a state title as a junior. Also plays basketball.

Jermaine Mathews' dimensions, controlled footwork and coverage ability remind us of Tre'Davious White. Mathews may be a bit more polished than White at the same stage, as White played quarterback in high school.

Jermaine Mathews -- 2023 CB -- Cincinnati Winton Woods -- Junior Year Highlights

Scouting Journal

Jermaine Mathews earns 5th star from On3

Charles Power

Jermaine Mathews (No. 14) was the best 2023 corner we saw all year – on film and in person. Though Mathews was not at an All-American game, the Ohio State pledge did enough this fall to merit his rise to the No. 1 corner spot and earn five-star status. Mathews was dominant at LSU’s camp in June. He’s around 5-foot-11, with good length and ran 4.35 and 4.40 at two different college camps. What he showed over the summer carried over to Friday nights, where Mathews showed outstanding ball production (five interceptions) along with general playmaking ability as a defender (multiple forced fumbles) and return man.

Jermaine Mathews continues rise in On3 rankings

Ohio State cornerback commit Jermaine Mathews (No. 48) made a huge jump in July’s update after we watched him put together a sensational showing at LSU’s elite camp in June. The 5-foot-11.5, 175-pounder pairs good size, length and athleticism with advanced technical cover skills. He’s shown that ability so far this fall at Cincinnati Winton Woods and is making plays in coverage, run support and as a return man.
