Georgia wide receiver Anthony Evans is in the news for all the right reasons. The incoming freshman early enrollee was seen on social media visiting a Georgia fan, 50-year-old Jeff Rooney, with terminal cancer over the weekend. Evans’ former teammate Jacob King posted a photo of Evans’ kind action on Twitter.

Evans flipped his commitment from Oklahoma to Georgia in November and signed with the Bulldogs during the Early Signing Period in December. He then joined the team for bowl practices and helped the Bulldogs prepare for the College Football Playoff games against Ohio State and TCU. Evans, a 5-foot-11, 155-pound player known for his speed, finished as the No. 196 player overall and No. 27 wide receiver according to the On3 Consensus.

“Excited about those guys. Speed, athleticism. Been here practicing with us. Each one is different,” Georgia head coach Kirby Smart said during his Signing Day press conference when speaking about the receivers – Evans along with Tyler Williams and Yazeed Haynes. “They all probably need — they’re going to have to hit the weight room and get stronger to be able to really do the things we want them to do, but you want to take a guy that has natural speed, the pass-catching ability, make you miss ability, run after the catch, vertical threats. We think we get that in those three guys.”

Evans enters a wide receiver room that is replacing one of its most talented weapons, AD Mitchell, as well as two very reliable options on the interior, Kearis Jackson and Dominic Blaylock. The Bulldogs bring back leading receiver Ladd McConkey as well as Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint who finished in the top-five on the team in receiving yards. Arian Smith and Dillon Bell also contributed at times this season and are going to be suiting up in a Georgia uniform again next year.

“Y’all like that Arian Smith guy, I’m assuming? Well, let’s consider that Smith, a high school track star who competed alongside Georgia track star Matthew Boling on an elite Pan-Am U20 team back in the day, ran his high school  best 100-meter in 10.47 second (and has since whittled that down to a ridiculous 10.18) per Milesplit. Evans? Mark him down at 10.27 in the same race per Milesplit,” DawgsHQ’s recruiting expert Jake Reuse wrote after Evans’ commitment. “That’s absolutely blistering speed, and the tape makes it abundantly clear that he’s not just laying down quicks like that on the track. Anthony Evans’ film is loaded up with full-on go routes, where he’s more than happy to scamper behind would-be defenders, reel in the catch, and house it at a steady jog. Mind you, this is in Texas high school football and the highest classification at that. The competition is as strong as any in the nation, and Evans is smoking guys left and right. Speed kills, of course, but Evans has plenty to offer outside of his ability to run.”
